Three airports serve New York City: John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. The John F. Kennedy International Airport is located approximately 12 miles from the heart of New York City, on JFK Access Road. It was originally known as the Idlewild Airport until 1963, when it was renamed after President Kennedy, and it is the busiest international airport in the United States. LaGuardia is located in the northern part of New York City, on Ditmars Boulevard, approximately 12 miles from downtown. The airport handles over 24 million passengers every year. Newark Liberty International Airport is located 15 miles southwest of New York City, on Brewster Road. When combined with the other two New York City airports, the three airports create the largest airport system in the United States.

Transportation in New York City

Due to limited parking, the most popular method of travel in New York City is by taxi. They charge metered rates, and several companies can be found at the main airport terminals. It can take 30 minutes to an hour to get from the airports to downtown New York depending on traffic. Car rentals are also available, and cost depends on the size of vehicle. The New York City Transit Authority bus system makes stops every two or three blocks, which makes them incredibly slow when travelling from the airport to downtown. Rides are available for an exact fare of $2.25, and the fees can be paid with subway tokens. The New York City subway system and several trains run throughout the city at flat rates, and both can take 40 minutes to over an hour to reach downtown.

Average Weather in New York

Because New York City is always alive with activity, the best time to travel to the city will depend on the person and his or her interests. From fall through early spring, Broadway comes alive with performances. January and February are the slowest months, so it is easier to locate tickets to shows, and for those looking for festivities, early December through New Year is one constant celebration. Winters in New York can be extremely cold, which can make it uncomfortable to explore the city. Average daytime highs in January are around 3°C, and average daytime temperatures in the summer are around 29°C. Summer is the perfect time for shorts and sandals, but a jacket is needed in spring and fall. If you plan to travel in the winter, you will need warm clothing, hats, gloves and a heavy coat.

Things to Do

The Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty are both landmark locations in New York, and for those who appreciate art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest museum in the United States with over two million works of art on display. In the summer through October, visitors can watch a baseball game played by the New York Mets or the New York Yankees major league teams. If you travel in the fall, it is the peak tourist season. Prices are higher and it may be difficult to locate accommodation. Off-season is between January and April, and hotels will offer discounts, but it may be difficult to enjoy the city at its fullest due to the weather.
