Downtown Melbourne hotel lures with vintage design and modern amenities

Located on Collins Street in the heart of downtown Melbourne, the Realto combines old architecture with modern-day amenities for a unique lodging experience. Portions of the structure date back to the late 1800s, but rooms have been modernized (most recently in 2008) to provide the latest creature comforts. The hotel features a 24-hour fitness center, as well as an indoor heated pool and standalone spa. One restaurant and two bars round out the diversions on-site.

Accommodations -- 253 rooms, including 9 suites -- vary in size and configuration. Each room comes standard with a flat-screen television, spacious work desk, mini-bar, bathrobe and in-room safe. Guests have access to high-speed Internet (fees apply), and receive nightly turndown service.

The Rialto dates back to 1891, when it was one of the most heralded new hotels in a developing Melbourne. Since then, the property has grown with the times to offer all of the most modern amenities. It was renovated most recently in 2008. Today, all guests enjoy free access to the hotel's heated indoor pool and 24-hour, state-of-the-art fitness center. There's also a spa on-site (fees apply). The Rialto even offers 24-hour laundry service (fees apply) and babysitting services (fees apply). For meals, try Alluvial, which specializes in fresh products sourced locally. Small plates and light meals also are available at Merchant, the other restaurant on the property. The Rialto also boasts two separate lounges: Rialto Bluestone Bar and Market Lane.

The room was lovely and 'mostly

The room was lovely and 'mostly clean', but there was a soap ring next to the sink which i was willing to overlook as the rest of the bathroom was sparkling. Unfortunately though, bedlthere was a mark on the inen that looked like chocolate (hopefully) which I didn't see until the morning. Getting the room at well under 1/2 price stopped me from complaining as I should have...something I now regret. The hotel is lovely and the food was great, but that cleaner obviously needs dealt with.
