Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel Shanghai

This hotel located in china #1 street "Nanjin Lu". From here famous Bund area is just walking distance. Breakfast was wonderful. There is live music in lobby lounge every evening. They have a small but very good gym at 5th floor. Also Finn sauna was very clean and nice. My colleagues really liked the spa in this hotel.

I stayed at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel Shanghai for one night. The hotel location is excellent, one block away from the Nanjing Road shopping district and two blocks away from the East Nanjing Road metro station, which itself is about 40 minutes from either airport on the Line 2 - shorter if you take the Maglev from Pudong Airport. It is well served by the metro and bus lines, and the front desk can call a taxi for you if necessary. The hotel is one of the best priced 5 star options in the immediate area but contains all the amenities and comforts that would be expected of one. I didn't get a chance to try out any of the restaurants, the pool, or the spa. However, the gym is well equipped and the lobby coffee shop does a decent brew, although there are many equally good yet more economical coffee options in the immediate area. The lobby has a nice ambience, with the warm hum of conversation during the day and live music at night. Check-in and check-out were both smooth, taking about 5 minutes apiece. The staff are polite, efficient, and have good English. They are also quite knowledgable and are happy to provide you with directions or other assistance. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Contrary to many other hotels in China, the bed was not significantly harder compared to what you'd find in an American hotel. My only gripe was that the showerhead was quite rusty. All in all, I had a pleasant experience at this hotel, and I would recommend it for both families and business people, short or extended stay.

While I would prefer a bed that was more comfortable, the value and location of this hotel are hard to beat in Shanghai.

This hotel has a truly excellent location, very short walk to the square and the best pedestrian shopping street in Shanghai, and to the Bund. The food was excellent, as was the room. The staff were very helpful, and helped to arrange two excellent tours (to the water city, a must, and a river trip at night (spectacular). I had to prompt them to check other tour companies that had tours running in the off season, but the result was great; nearly private tours with one other charming family or traveling companion each time. The price was quite reasonable, for a central big city hotel. I would definately choose to stay in this hotel again if going to Shanghai as a tourist.

I was spending my vacation with my son in Shanghai. This hotel is centally located, close to the Nanjing pedestrain street, the Bund, the People's Park and Shanghai Meseum. The staffs at the front desk are somewhat cold. The restaurant on the second floor is really poorly managed. The staffs definitely need more training. I had a dinner there with 7 invited friends. They forgot a to cook one of the dishes I ordered. In the end I had to cancel that dish.

Will stay again

Good position - easy walk to the Bund and other tourist attractions, including shopping. Staff were very helfpul. Overall the hotel was excellent, but the bed was the hardest we had ever slept on.
