Not a 4 star hotel
Anyone who rates this a 4 star hotel has never stayed in a 4 star hotel. This would be a 2 star hotel at best in any major city in the United States or Europe for that matter. The room is very basic, almost like an efficiency room. There are no amenities. It has a dorm room feel to it and is very small. The television set is the size of a computer monitor and gets about 10 channels. No power adapters (they tell you to go buy one). Weird bed with two twin size blankets covering the queen size bed. It's just a sad and depressing room. There is just no chance that this is a 4 star hotel and I question the rating system that gives it 4 stars. I have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world. I'm not even sure a 3 star would be justified relative to 3 stars in the US. Maybe Iceland hotels have a different rating system. The location is good, but that's it.

Perfect location
The hotel is in the best possible location. It is quiet and you can walk everywhere. the three best restaurants are within four blocks and to reach the shopping area and sights (Parliament, churches, waterfront) is a five minute walk in any direction. The rooms are functional but Iceland is about activity so by the end of the day all that you want is a comfortable bed and a great, hot bath-both completely available at this hotel.

Best Location and Breakfast in the area
The hotel is modern, clean and cozy. The rooms are comfortable with a nice modern bathroom and plenty of space for us two. The breakfast is not included in the price, but is a large buffet and the best deal we found in the city. Reykjavik doesn't get going til about 10 or 11am so if an early breakfast is a big deal, here it is good and for guests only. The hotel is right downtown and central to everything. We were walking and relying on excursions and public transportation so this was important to be accessible to everything.

Entertainment tip:
Short walk from hotel
Iceland Excursions are the best bus tour company and located downtown. The guides are knowledgable and narrate the entire time. We learned a lot about Iceland on their trips.

Great location
Great location in center of town. Walking distance to everything. Far enough from the bars that it is quiet. Staff very nice, rooms not huge but clean and very comfortable.

Great location but will charge you for extras
A nice hotel with a location in the center of everything you want to see. Not a lot of frills like some of the other hotels. If you want more elegance, go for Borg or Radisson Blu. But, this is very affordable. They will charge you for WiFi. Food at restaurant is expensive. A nice Icelandic breakfast- pretty typical.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Eat at Tornid or Caruso's if you want delicious non-Icelanidc food. On the harbor, there is a freshly caught fish, whale, or lobster soup at Saegreifinn (cheap too).

Nice place -charges for things it shouldn't
Clean, modern with helpful staff. Like many 'up-scale' hotels it charged for breakfast and wi-fi which are often free at locations charging quite a bit less. I would sooner stay a 'notch' lower and not be 'chipped' at.

Great location!
The hotel was in a great location close to the city center. Walking distance to all the restaurants and shops. The room was clean and quiet. The bathroom was a little small, but it was fine. The people who worked at the front desk were very friendly and helpful by offering suggestions for places to eat and tours to take. One of them helped me dicipher the language and gave me a little lesson in pronunciation. I highly recommend staying at this hotel.

I understand Icelandair offers a layover in Iceland at no extra charge for those traveling on to Europe. That would be a great way to see Iceland for a few days.

At home in central Reykjavik
I stayed at Hotel Centrum 3 separate times within 10 days while starting and finishing a driving tour in Iceland and again on my way back from Norway. I looked forward to returning. The staff is helpful and efficient, the central location cannot be beat, and rooms are very comfortable. The hotel architecture is interesting and breakfast buffets are fantastic.

Two tips: Icelandic Fish & Chips, for healthy and impeccably fresh food; the quirky Bæjarins beztu pylsur for an outstanding hot dog. You can have one thing, a hot dog. Oh, and a coke. Don't miss it.
