Hotel Columbus is perfect.
A hotel just two short blocks from St. Peter's Bassilica. It's centrally located, we didn't need to bother with a cab for dinner or out tour of the Vatican. The staff is friendly and the property itself is filled with history. There are antiques galore in this place, and it made our stay just that much more interesting. I really enjoyed the European style breakfast as well as the gorgeous frescos in the dining room. The front desk staff was able to help this language challenged American find whatever I needed and got us out of a jam with a late arriving taxi to the airport.

Head out the hotel, through the arch down the street to find an assortment of cafes featuring some pretty decent Italian food, great service, and plentiful bottles of wine.

A great hotel
This hotel was the best one we used on our trip to Italy. It was in a great location, friendly service (everyone spoke English, too), and fantastic free breakfast buffet. The rooms were small but adequate, and the building was in great shape and really pretty/historic. Even though it was on a busy street the rooms were quiet. I would definitely stay there again.

A fantastic hotel located very
A fantastic hotel located very near the Vatican. It's not just any hotel since they have kept the big halls on the 1st and 2nd floor. The breakfast room and the garden are also really nice you can't believe you are in the centre of Rome. The bed rooms are OK but could do better with a renovation. Change the carpet to wood or stone floor and renew the bathrooms will make the hotel a bit fresher.

Joe an ordinary traveller
above average stay near san pietro
everything is great if you're looking for an older christian atmosphere. the service is also above average but be warn, DO NOT go on the tour service provided by the hotel as it seems to be wasting more of your time exploring the city you'll ended up spending most of your time waiting for other passenger even if it's an hour wait for one more person so the tour can get an extra 50euro. Any other tour that's not offered via the hotel such as the green line tour will be better. Also be aware about the air conditioning, it will not be as cold as you may wish it to be especially in the summer sun. Otherwise this is a great hidden place if you really want to explore the vatican city. just remember no GREEN LINE TOUR!

Time-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
to the vatican museums and san pietro basilica so you can be sure to get up early, have a nice breakfast at the hotel before walking to wait in line at the squares. please beware that the line can get as long as across the square just before noon as I witnessed when i left the basilica.

Hotel Columbus July 4-9 2009
The hotel is a block from the Vatican! Wide variety of tour buses pick up and drop off in front of the hotel too. Close to other city transportation, though we did not use metro. Close to shopping, restaurants, Hadrian's Castle, St. Peter's/Sistine Chapel. Free breakfast is good, but the same every day. City tours available at the desk. Desk staff helpful, multi-lingual. Didn't have a pool, and in the summer this would have made the hotel wonderful. Rooms quite bland in decor and entertainment, but large. A/C in room not especially effective, but temp was tolerable.

Use the hop on/hop off buses to see the city. They depart across the street from the hotel. Avoid the hotel restaurant and the restaurants on Borgo Pio (expensive).

oh what a sight
Oh! What a view
We had a wonderful view of the Basilica of Saint Peter from our window. Unfortunately that window was one of the only two small windows in the entire room, and we had a corner room. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Hotel Columbus, Rome
As soon as you walk onto the street in front of the hotel, I turned left and I was standing directly in front of the Vatican. Location was great, would stay again.
