Converted villa outside St. Peter’s Square
Once a 15th century villa, the Hotel Columbus has been converted to a 92-room hotel. Located on the promenade leading to St. Peter’s Square and meters from the Tevere River and Castel Sant’ Angelo, the Hotel Columbus sits among Rome’s most notable attractions. Rooms are basic, but La Veranda, the hotel’s restaurant situated in a grand hall with frescoed ceilings, is a must-see.

  • Outside Vatican City
  • Enchanting restaurant
  • Spinal-cranial treatments
  • Free parking
Location
Hotel Columbus sits between the Tevere River and the entrance to St. Peter’s Square. Guests walk to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum and Castel Sant’ Angelo. Tour busses and transportation to Termini is found outside the hotel.
Rooms
Rooms vary in size, but all have a simple feel. Outfitted with basic furniture and sparse décor, rooms at the Hotel Columbus offer an uncomplicated environment to rest and relax. Features
Steps from St. Peter’s Square, the Hotel Columbus is ideal for those looking to spend time in Vatican City. Tour busses are boarded outside the hotel and Piazza Navona and the Pantheon are across the river. Old, tired and expensive. The air-conditioner was dripping water all the time, wetting the carpet. Nothing good to say about it.

Rome for centric seniors

We wanted easy access to public transportation and sites in Rome. We could attend services in St. Peter's Basilica, walk to Castel St'Angelo, ride public bus out to the Appian Way and catch the on-off buses to tour in comfort. Parking for a price was also available. it was quiet and non-trafficted at night. Very professional staff.

Unbeatable location - Rome/Vatican

I would recommend this hotel for its location and proximity to the Vatican. It sits on a beautiful street and is located within the palace of the cardinal who became pope and commissioned Micahelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. Our room was large by European standards and the bathroom was modern with a stall shower. The restaurant and food was terrific. The breakfast area has historic frescos on the ceiling and walls. The staff was pleasant and very helpful- they all spoke great english. This is the second time we stayed here and it never disappoints us. The location is fantastic, close to transportation, a stone's throw from St Peter's square and easy walking (for us - 60+) to the Trevi fountain, castle SanAngelo, historic Rome, etc.

Excellent location & free parking.

Excellent location & free parking. had dinner in restaurant which was very good & staff very accomodating as we arrived in late. good breakfast but rooms are dated & basic but that would not put me off staying there again as the character & location of the hotel made up for this.

P & R

Nice people, excellent service, nice safe area, close to transportation and good inexpensive restaurants. Very handy to the Vatican. From our window, we could see dome of Saint Peter Basilica and Pope's apartment. Only downside was 15 Euros (or about $20 US) each day for Internet service. That is the highest price I've ever seen anywhere.

2nd rate

The location is very near St. Peters Square but that is what this hotel is living off. There has been no obvious effort to address updates to the rooms...the carpet was very dirty. There is only internet access in the lobby, the breakfast is only marginal, the prices in the resturant are very expensive. Laundry was late, etc. It was a place to sleep but I would not recommend it unless you are in a pinch like we were...this was not a 4-star as indicated when we selected it.

Just a few blocks away are some nice little resturants that are far less expensive than the hotel.

Columbus Hotel, Rome, Italy

The hotel location was fantastic. We could not have chosen a better location for access to St. Peters and the Vatican...as well as the rest of Rome. The hotel room itself is the compromise. It was a bit rough, but we made do with the limited ammenities that were available (shower, toilet, sink, bed, 3 TV channels in English (all "news"), limited storage... all that said, the location made up for the minimal room benefits.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The Hop-On-Hop-Off tourist buses stop right outside the hotel and are WELL worth the price if it's your first, or even second, time to Rome. You can place your ticket order online to save some time, but they'll be happy to take care of you at the bus stop. Just be sure you're aware of the prices before hand because there are many street vendors that will try to sell you the same tour for a few extra euros.

Rome, the not so good.

Checked in, checked out. Got up to the room and was in disbelief. I told my wife the only thing missing was a flashing neon light outside the window. Felt like I walked into a hotel in the year 1942. The location is great, hotel needs a lot of work. Rooms are very outdated and worn. Not the kind of room you would take off your shoes and walk around. We found another place on our own and checked out two hours after checking in. [...] Staff at the front desk was understanding and courteous and we never faulted them. They went out of their way to try and work with us with a different room but it was not where we wanted to be.
