Grand Elegance & Basic Comforts
Hotel Columbus has a very helpful, English-speaking staff. The hotel - built 500 years ago for a Cardinal - still has its historical grandeur. The rooms were clean, fairly roomy, and had many bells & whistles like in-room safe and a full range of toiletries offered in the bathroom. Our rooms were in the back facing the quiet courtyard; our hallway had a row of windows opened every morning with wonderful and fun views. The breakfast was better than I thought it would be, and was served in what was probably the cardinal's audience room. The location by the Vatican was great for us, and it was a close walk to bus stops and taxi stands. The Borgo is a great neighborhood to explore and dine. The grand restaurant at the hotel served us very good food but was too fussy for our party's tastes. Hotel Columus will offer you finer memories than a more modern, chain, or cookie-cutter hotel.

If you have an early flight out like we did, have the desk call you a cab. It is a set price of 40 Euro for 4 of us [with 4 bags] and the driver was quick, polite, and honest. It saved a lot of headaches over taking public transport back.

A real historic Gem! Perfect breakfast. Perfect Bathroom. Perfect location (bus 40 stops around the corner. Wifi does not work well, that is actually not surprising as the atmosphere of the hotel is about 'ancient times revisited', don't spend too much time behind your laptop it tells you - smile!

Hotel Columbus
The staff was friendly and helpful. The lobby was clean and roomy. The location was perfect if you want to tour St. Peter's! We did walk to many places including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, St. Mary Major Basilica and much more. If you like to walk, there is a lot to see. Internet was 2.50 euro an hour, which I thought should be free.

Beautiful Hotel Columbus in Rome
Hotel Columbus in Rome is extremely charming. A European buffet breakfast was served in a vast ballroom with huge paintings. The dining room with its arches and frescoes is beautiful...so is the courtyard! The staff was extremely nice and helpful...changed our worthless American dollars for Euros at a much better rate than the banks and airport. To find the cafes, you need to investigate the narrow alleys across the main street. We walked everywhere from our hotel, which is right by St. Patricks and the Vatican.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Get away from the main streets and investigate the neighborhood cafes and shops. We had a great time ending up in different neighborhoods. You must go to the Jewish Ghetto area. Be curious and go off the beaten path...but watch out for the crazy drivers on scooters! LOL.

Columbus Hotel, Italy
You can see St Peter's Basilica from your room. Excellent walking location to most sights; Trevi Fountain, Navorra Plaza, Pantheon etc. On bus routes to all major areas. I have stayed in Rome 2ce before and without a doubt this was the best hotel for location, price and service. The desk staff could not do enough for us. One even drove us to the car rental to pick up our car after his shift was done. Rooms are small but all are in Rome. Charming former palace with fabulous antiques and great breakfast included in price of room. It is the only hotel I will stay at in Rome for future trips. Even had parking!

Nice hotel, but need to update check-in
Overall the hotel was very nice. I am very skiddish about hotels and cleanliness and I had no issues with Hotel Columbus as far as that is concerned. The hotel is perfect if you want an "old world" experience, not for someone looking to stay in a very modern hotel. Only a stones throw from the Vatican and an ATM. There is also a bus stop directly across the street for bus tours of famous sites in the city. The only issue I had was that when I booked the hotel the check-in on the computer was noon. When my husband and I arrived, we were (what we thought was) only about 20 minutes early but then we were told we couldn't check in till 1pm. We had been up for 24 hours (we traveled from Buffalo, NY) and had to walk around the city for over an hour, completely exausted, hungry and desperately needing showers. They did take our luggage and store it but we had our carry-ons because of the money and passports.
