DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
The location of the hotel is very convinient, it is right next to St Peters square. That is the only good point about this hotel. It is extremely overpriced for the value you get. The rooms have not been renovated in 50 years! It is stinky, dirty and very outdated! The furniture is very old and all scratched up. The bathrooms are very old and not clean. We have to change our room because of the bathroom and very stincky smell of the carpet in the room. The bathroom was tiny with a hole in the floor and a shower head on the wall with two curtains going around. It was horrible, the tile was all broken and very dirty, When we made a complain, we were told " It is an antique hotel", and yes it is, but it doesn't have to be dirty and all outdated... Breakfast was just a very basic continental style, but without any fresh fruits... I would not recommend to anyone to stay in this hotel!

Uncomfortable
This hotel is perfectly located near the Vatican, but I would not return because the room was hot and the bed uncomfortable. Housekeeping would turn the AC off every day while we were out (and the AC didn't work well to begin with). We had to leave a note for them to keep it on so that our room would be cool after returning from the 90 degree days in Rome. They also did not replenish our soap and shampoo. The wifi was out of order for a day, after we had to pay 3 euros for an hour of usage. We later learned that wifi in the lobby is free, even though the lady at the front desk told us we had to pay. The architecture of the place is cool and it felt like a castle, but the lighting was awful and gives it a spooky/dreary feel.

Europe BDAY
Old hotel - dirty
My mother-in-law and mother both turned 70 this year and for their birthday I gave them a trip to Europe with myself and 2 children. I used the recommendations from various sites to organize the trip. I was quite worried all would go well since both mothers have never been out of the country. One of our stops was the Hotel Columbus. This was by far the worst hotel and hotel experience of our entire trip. The staff was not friendly upon arrival. They quizzed my booking even though i sent them a special email before our trip to make sure all was in order. After I showed them the email I sent, they were ok. The 1st room was filthy and asked to be moved. The 2nd room was better but still dirty. They need a major renovation. If the location were not so close to the Vatican, I would have left the 1st night.

Excellent location, so-so property
Cant beat the location right on the main street leading to Saint Peter's Square. The hotel is so antiquated. With some essential upgrading, this property could become a 4 star hotel.

Beware
This hotel has a great location right next to the Vatican and right on the street where the city hop on hop off are. However when it comes to the hotel it is old, tired, and only a two star hotel. We traveled Italy for two weeks and this was the only hotel we thought that was not ranked properly. The doors are very old and slam every time someone leaves the room, you could hear the person talking and coughing next door through the walls and the furniture was as old as the building. I would not recommend this hotel at all.

Less than a bargain
There is LOUD construction 24/7 in a building that faces the back of the hotel. This kept us up a couple of nights until the desk clerk acknowledged the noise and moved us to a room facing the courtyard. This too was loud until the restaurant closed around 11:00p.m. The rooms were sparse in decoration and there was no hot water on our last day prior to leaving on a 13 hour flight to get back home. The stafff was friendly, spoke excellent English and provided good directions when requested.

2nd rate
The location is very near St. Peters Square but that is what this hotel is living off. There has been no obvious effort to address updates to the rooms...the carpet was very dirty. There is only internet access in the lobby, the breakfast is only marginal, the prices in the resturant are very expensive. Laundry was late, etc. It was a place to sleep but I would not recommend it unless you are in a pinch like we were...this was not a 4-star as indicated when we selected it.

Rome, the not so good.
Checked in, checked out. Got up to the room and was in disbelief. I told my wife the only thing missing was a flashing neon light outside the window. Felt like I walked into a hotel in the year 1942. The location is great, hotel needs a lot of work. Rooms are very outdated and worn. Not the kind of room you would take off your shoes and walk around. We found another place on our own and checked out two hours after checking in. [...] Staff at the front desk was understanding and courteous and we never faulted them. They went out of their way to try and work with us with a different room but it was not where we wanted to be.

good hotel for location
Beautiful old hotel. It was over 100 degrees the whole time and the hotel had no a/c over 90% of it. The a/c in the room STUNK!!!!!! We were dreading going to bed. For the price good a/c would have been wonderful. The resturant for lunch was closed for the summer. Let down! It was prime location if you are looking to start around the Vatican! Beautiful old building with lovely furnishings. REALLY WISH THEY HAD GOOD A/C. If going during fall or winter good choice
