Japanese inn or modern hotel? Guests get to decide
In the heart of Kyoto, steps from a subway station and minutes from dining and entertainment options, the Village Kyoto offers an intriguing twist on the traditional vs. modern hotel debate. Rooms are designed with traditional Japanese tatami flooring and sofa beds with optional mattresses and Japanese futon bedding, allowing guests to enjoy the space in their own way. The Village Kyoto offers a complimentary bento breakfast, communal baths for men and women, business services and fixed-room rates, making it ideal for families and large groups.
Highlights
- Excellent location near Kyoto Tower
- New property with flexible room design
- Complimentary bento breakfast
- Business services available
Location
The Village Kyoto is located near the unique Costume Museum, a must-see for those interested in exploring the history of Japan in miniature. Since 1974, the museum has exhibited dolls dressed in the varied and beautiful garments worn throughout the history of Japan.
Rooms
The guest rooms at the Village Kyoto are decorated in a stylish fusion of traditional comfort and sleek modernity, featuring Japanese tatami flooring and sofa beds. In this configuration, guests can relax in a more open, inn-style space. However, the property also features optional mattresses and Japanese futon bedding, allowing for a "normal" hotel experience. Rooms feature large LCD televisions, microwaves, refrigerators and bidet toilets. Guests also receive traditional "samue" sleepwear -- loose-fitting kimono-style tops and trousers. Complimentary wired Internet access is available.
Features
While the Village Kyoto does not have an on-site restaurant, it does offer guests a complimentary bento (boxed) breakfast each morning that is delivered to the room. Guests can choose between three bento options: Japanese, Western and sushi. The property also features spacious, separate communal baths for men and women, a traditional Japanese staple used for relaxation.

Very clean hotel. Beautiful facilities and close to rail and bus links. Bit pricey and a little way out of town - but nonetheless an excellent place to stay. The baths were terrific and very well looked after.

last minute booking
We got a last minute booking at the Kyoto Village Hotel, close to Shijoomiya station. Very lucky - good location, helpful staff and comfortable room. Would recommend and would stay there again. We hired bicycles near the nearby food market, and found travelling around the city very easy.

The staff were very friendly and spoke excellent English. The quality of the finishes and fittings was superb. We had actually booked for the wrong nights, but they just accepted it as a simple mistake! Very good location for most attractions. Overall, a real jewell of a hotel.

The Village Hotel, I guess, is
The Village Hotel, I guess, is somewhere between a western hotel and a ryokan, as it has an onsen-like bath, with separate facilities for men and women, although you also get a shower in the rooms. For a place that cost me over £200 per night, I was surprised at the lack of facilities on offer. There is no swimming pool and no gym and the breakfast is simply a bento box. I think it was this that I found least appealing, as the choices on offer in the bento boxes left me as a not-enthusiastic eater of eastern food before lunch, with only the western-style box. This contained a breakfast that could have been plane food, although, of course, the eggs and ham/bacon were cold. Breakfasts on a plane are usually to be avoided and so we avoided this breakfast after one attempt and bought our own food from the 7/11 across the way.

With 3 children (11, 10 and 4)
With 3 children (11, 10 and 4) we booked a large suite with a bathroom. Although small by western standards, the room was very comfortable. Breakfast was delivered to our doorstep and in individual boxes. Free high speed internet connection. Bedding was Japanese style i.e. tatamis. The hotel is within a short train ride or taxi ride away from most attractions. A good value for the money.

Japanese style hotel - you sleep
Japanese style hotel - you sleep on tatami and have to make your bed every evening by yourself. Very clean, very friendly people at the reception. We did not like the bento box breakfast. From my point of view very good location on the main street and very near to one of the important bus stations with very good connections to all part of th city.
