Hotel New Otani
This was a very extravagant looking hotel. I was very awe struck upon entering this place. The view from our room was great. Besides that, everything was down hill. The sheets had stains all over them and I was thinking this is what you get from a 5 star hotel? Also, you pay so much to spend the night there, you'd expect to get internet service for free, but not the case here. we had to pay 13 bucks or so for internet per night.

A good hotel for specific clientele.
This is not a bad hotel, by any means. My stay was comfortable and pleasant enough. I have no major complaints. However, it was also not an exceptional experience, either. Let's start with the positives. The big highlight is the authentic Japanese Garden located behind the facility. New Otani also has good proximity to a central subway station (Asakusa-Mitsuke, connect easily to Ginza and Manouchi lines), a good restaurant/bar district, as well as reasonable proximity to a Citibank ATM station (important for withdrawing on a foreign debit card). My room in particular - though smallish and slightly under-equipped with amenities - had a very nice view. My main issue with the Hotel Otani is that it seems specifically catered to rich, older, Japanese clientele. Almost every service is expensive and every dining option was impractically expensive. $10 (1000+ yen) for the laundering of a single piece of clothing, $45+(4500+ yen) for lunches or dinner. You can walk down the street and get a beef rice curry dish for under 1000yen at the British-style pub, walk a little further and get a tasty 1800yen "maguro" sushi-type bowl, or go to the West Park Cafe for a decent 2000yen brunch/lunch. Moreover, the nearby shops are very much "blue blood" style shops... not somewhere you would go for tourism shopping or even practical shopping. Save tourist shopping for the Asakusa temple district. Summarizing this point, while at the New Otani, I felt very much out of place being an often casually-dressed foreigner who spent most of his day trekking around and exploring the city, sometimes in poor weather. The staff is exceptionally kind and friendly. Check-in, Check-out, and a few minor requests (ironing board, band-aids) were handled efficiently. Just note that - as an English traveler - only a few staff speak English, and only on a limited basis. Since my Japanese is very paltry, I would have probably done better to lodge at a "Western" hotel, in retrospect. In terms of amenities, the hotel gym is clean yet poor, even by hotel standards. Meanwhile, the pool is laboriously far and not free to hotel residents, surprising considering the room fee. However, it does bear mentioning again that the hotel location is superior and the local Japanese garden was as good as advertised. Just don't eat lunch in there. So, in conclusion, I give the New Otani a 3-star rating. It's not a bad hotel, but considering the price and comparing with the many other Asian hotels that I have experienced, New Otani just seemed very ordinary. You won't be sorry if you stay here, but I should hope that Tokyo can do better.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
Rather than rely on the hotel restaurant facilities, walk a short clip towards and slightly beyond the Asasaka-Mitsuke subway for much more affordable dining options. In terms of dining options (aside from the "Cafe Lounge") the restaurants are "tourist traps"... too expensive for not enough value.

Room so-so, service amazing, pool fee
The hotel and service were great. The room looks more like a 3 star and the fee to use the poll is $50 per person. Otherwise the great location, but the room was disappointing.

Tokyo
For the price it was ok, but they charged for internet, the beds were hard and there didn't seem to be a public bath. For a 5 star hotel I really expected more. I'd much rather stay at a Dormi Inn than this place.

Great views, but a bit dated.
The views are great from the Garden Tower and the garden itself is great. But the amenities feel quite 70s and it is a stuffy place. All in all nice, but dated.

Good quality and beautiful location
I have been a visitor to the New Otani Hotel several times now. I have never been disappointed with the service and the classic style of the hotel. The garden is incredible and something to see. Don't forget to go to the basement where there are several nice shops and restaurants all conveniently within the facility. There is also a post office and a travel bureau (JTB)where several accommodations can be arranged. My wife and I were there in April during the cherry blossom time. It was both beautiful and elegant. We had friends visit us at the hotel and took advantage of some of the nice restaurants. It is a short stroll from the Tokyo Metro Subway. The subway stop on the Ginza Line is Akasaka Mitsuke.

There are several nice dining options in the hotel. Don't forget to check the basement selections. They are not cheap, however, but certainly first class. If you speak Japanese, that is a definite plus.

Business hotel in a good setting
Great business / executive hotel. Frequented by heads of state, senior executives. Good selection of restaurants, fantastic teppanyaki steakhouse in the gardens; however in the basement there is a great yakitori restaurant at an attractive price. Walking distance from Akasaka-Mitsuke station. Akasaka area has many 'interesting' establishments, perfect for an evening stroll.

Outstanding place to stay
I was on a business trip to Tokyo and stayed at the New Otani Hotel. The staff was always pleasent and helpful. Rooms were nice - mine offered a view of Tokyo Tower. Location was very good. Subway a short walk away and plenty of resturants just beyond that. I was a little disapointed in the bars within the hotel itself, but with so many nearby it is not really an issue.

Great place to get away
Great place to get away, for an older person..... The Hotel "New Otani" is one of Tokyo's premier business hotels, that means the service is excellent, it is immaculately cleaned, with probably some of the best facilities in Tokyo, but it is geared towards the business class person. Being in my 20's I wanted something a bit more upbeat. The location is great, it is right next to Akasaka station which can connect you to anywhere in Tokyo. Just get a Passmo card with about 3000yen on it and your good to go. I traveled all over Tokyo using the card for 5 days Shibuya, Shinjuku.... ect. The rooms were great, the size of the room was comparable with a suite at a holiday inn. I recommend you walk in the Hotel garden while there, the coy fish are huge. Tokyo Tower is about a 3000yen taxi ride from the hotel. Heneda airport is about a 7000yen taxi ride away. The Hotel has a Shuttle service to Narita. The hotel Otani was an excellent place, with good location and excellent facilities.
