Good But Not Great

If you go to SMB between June and October, expect to be uncomfortably hot in the ala carte restaurants, the lobby bar and the Desires disco. For a 1 year old high end resort, this is unacceptable. After 10 PM there were rarely more than 3 or 4 couples in the lobby bar or the disco. Everyone seemed to go back to their rooms which were cooler but not cold. The pool was beautiful but outside of pool volleyball, the activity pool is incredibly quiet with budha bar type music playing softly all day. A great environment for romance and recovery from a nervous breakdown, but not much fun. Lobby bar entertainment ranged from a harp player to a magician to an accordion/violin duo. Hardly exciting enough to attract the mostly younger honeymooning guests. Other resorts we've been to usually have more upbeat entertainment at their lobby bar. A sax player on the beach one evening kept the attention of the guests for about 20 minutes before most people went back to their rooms. The disco was lively one night out of 7 when they brought in a rock band and the only other activity that seemed to inspire the generally younger guests was outdoor NFL football on a big screen. We have been to Cancun/Riv Maya six times, but this resort was the least inspiring. If you need to be in Riviera Maya, try the Iberostar Paraiso Grand or The Royal in Playa del Carmen. If you enjoy a more active, vibrant vacation try The Royal Cancun or Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun. These resorts provide more of a WOW factor. When you walk into the lobby of the SMB, it's a non event - hot and unimpressive. The place has nice rooms, decent food, very good service, excellent brands of booze but if you have been to some high end places in Cancun/Riv Maya, you may complete your stay and go home feeling that something was missing. They should allow reciprical access to Secrets Capri & Silversands which are each about 10 to 15 minutes away, however if you want to visit these places for the day, they charge something close to $200 per couple for the day. No shuttle sevice to Playa del Carmen. Expect to pay about $40 plus tip for a return trip.

World Class Treatment

Fabulous vacation. Truly all inclusive. We traveled from 09/16 thru 09/22/09. Rooms were spotless and service was impeccable. Staff was very friendly and prompt. Anything we asked for was taken care of. Entertainment was great. Activities during the day were fun and the staff was hilarious and entertaining. Nightly entertainment wasn't the best, but definitely gave us something fun to do. We loved our stay, would recommend this resort to anyone looking to relax and be treated like kings. Food was great, a little on the fancy side for the dinner portions, but tasted great. We would have packed more "dressy" clothes had we known it was so elegant. But the staff didn't mind our casual evening dress. Our only complaint was the mosquito problem. Although it rained overnight every night which probably contributed to the problem. The staff provided our own bug spray and used some type of smoke machine to treat the resort property.

Nightlife tip: In Hotel

Bring mosquito repellant if you go during the bad season. Also, bring nice clothes for dinner. Guys must wear pants and they encourage nicer dress. Jeans are fine. Girls can get away with anything really. No sleeveless shirts for the guys at ANY time in the restaurants.

unbeatable location for the price

best vacation ever - the hotel was absolutely beautiful and the wait staff was amazing. We did not want to leave the property to do excursions because the hotel offerred entertainment, good food/service and the guests became our friends. The only complaint I have is that the hotel lobby and restaurants were hot.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

The only issue with shopping was that it was not far but the cab ride was spendy so we decided not to venture into the city. I wish we had and would spend the money the next time on that instead of the excursions we opted for.

Great 27th Anniversary At Secrets Maroma

I have been coming to the Riviera Maya for more than 20 years. Secrets Maroma is the best All Inclusive I have ever stayed at. The service and food were very good. The beach was perfect. I didn't feel like I needed to leave the property because everything was provided.
