Lovely, intimate hotel in a perfect location
My husband and I stayed at the Museum Hotel a few months ago, and we weren't impressed with our dark room, even though we loved the hotel and its central location. The decor is funky, featuring the work of local artists in the foyer. The atmosphere is intimate and the hotel is near the waterfront as well as tthe national museum, a few great restaurants, shops, movies, theaters, a great supermarket and our favorite bakery, Pandoro. But this time, we were in a studio apartment and it was amazing. Though the decor could use a bit of sparkle, the suite had a beautiful bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen including a washer/dryer. We loved every minute.

Our favorite NZ city!
Wellington is the BEST city in NZ. Great vibe, loads of restaurants and bars, gorgeous waterfront, interesting architecture, and Te Papa, the nation's museum which is a standout...and free. We stayed in an apartment at the hotel...fully equipped with dishwasher and even a washer/dryer. Well appointed room and quite comfortable. Great location across from the Te Papa and waterfront. Sunday market is just across the street. Lots of restaurants and bars in surrounding streets. Be sure to take the cable car to the top of the hill (a modest $3) for a spectacular view of the city. Then walk back down through the fabulous botanical gardens. You could spend a day in there!

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Hotel WiFi is expensive (as elsewhere in NZ), but you can find free service along the waterfront and at the Te Papa. Unfortunately, you'll probably need to be outside to get decent reception and it breaks up frequently. Good enough for Skype though. Te Papa has a tiny bar in the cafe that serves pancakes starting at $3.50...the best priced meal we found in Wellington.

Good location for Te Papa and
Good location for Te Papa and the CBD. Ho hum facilities though. The room which they said was an upgrade was pretty ordinary. Hardly an apartment suite. Just a room with an little kitchenette squeezed in. The pool was grey concrete under a lean to and pretty uninviting. Lack of attention to detail. No newspaper the second day. A partly disabled coffee machine that only took pods which had to be purchased. Really really cheap and nasty loo paper. Dreadful TV reception and picture (but then the views from the window were great). Would try somewhere else next time.

We loved our stay at the Museum Hotel, staff were very friendly and helpful and the room very spacious and clean and modern. We were very pleased we chose to eat in at the Hippopotamus Restaurant, with it's opulent decor, exceptional service and fabulous menu and beverage range. Definitely go back there again!
