Boutique hotel features hand-painted frescoes on guest room ceilings
Budget-friendly hotels do not usually offer the decor and personal touches found at the Alaaddin Hotel. Guests get a visual treat in their hotel rooms thanks to hand-painted frescoes on the ceilings. Other features that make the seven-floor Alaaddin special include its classical exterior and roof garden café. The Alaaddin is on Istanbul’s historic peninsula. Nearby attractions include the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern.
Highlights
  • Hand-painted frescoes on guest room ceilings
  • Walking distance to major attractions
  • Close to tram station
  • Complimentary wired and wireless Internet access in guest rooms
Rooms
The decor in the hotel’s 18 rooms make them feel far grander than their cost should allow. All rooms have full amenities. The room decor is the clear star of a stay at the Alaaddin. Rooms feature antique or antique-style furniture and hand-pained ceiling frescoes. Rich patterns cover many of the fabrics and walls. Eight of the hotel’s rooms look out on a former language school erected in 1874. Room amenities include complimentary high-speed Internet access and bedroom slippers.
Features
The hotel’s terrace restaurant offers stunning views of Istanbul, the Bosphorus, and historic sites including Topkapi Palace and the Hagia Sophia. Guests who prefer indoor dining can take a seat in the elegant dining room. The dining room also features a frescoed ceiling. Other hotel amenities include a breakfast room and 24-hour room service.

adequate, affordable, conveniently located

The affordable rate especially suited my 10 night conference / research trip stay and I found the hotel wholly adequate for my needs: convenient location, clean and comfortable rest, delicious breakfast provided, and adequate internet access. Location was perfect as I was working mainly at Süleymaniye library within walking distance. For those visiting the main sites of the historic peninsula (Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Çemberlitaş Baths, Grand Bazaar, etc. etc.) it is exceptionally convenient. Otherwise, reaching other parts of the city (for conference and leisure) was also incredibly convenient as the hotel is located so near tram stops along Divanyolu Caddesi, falling between Sultanahmet (closest down the hill) and Çemberlitaş (just up the hill). Hotel staff were attentive and helpful and I felt quite safe though traveling alone. Room was small but comfortable and attended daily with clean towels, etc. Bed was comfortable and in room bathroom with shower was perfectly adequate. Clothes closet was plenty spacious. Roosters and other animals could be heard in the early morning but were not a great bother, especially with window closed. Breakfast was a special pleasure with Turkish fare (olives, cheese, tomato, cucumber, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, yogurt even freshly made börek most mornings) and also various meats (I am vegetarian), sweet breads, cereal, etc. with tea and coffee and juice. Lovely view from the breakfast room and roof top terrace. Internet access was provided (seemingly with a router for each floor) and connectivity was generally good to very good. I had no difficulty conducting my online work.

Great location for Sultanahmet

First impressions were not the best. I had prearranged transfers from the airport and was met by a young teenage boy who couldn't speak a word of English (and who managed to use 2 phones at once, 1 in each ear!). He had obviously been told to wait for quite a few others as we were shepherded together and gestured to wait for quite a while. Eventually it became clear we were to share a minibus with another couple who were staying in another hotel, so off we went. I had read reviews from others that the rooms were small - on arriving at the hotel I realised that was an understatement! However, it was clean and well decorated, apart from the central light fitting being held only by the wires connecting it to the power supply. There doesn't seem to be very good soundproofing inside the hotel, plus as our room was facing straight out onto the street at street level and we could hear everything outside too, even with the window shut. There wasn't any air conditioning as stated either. Despite this it was a nice hotel and very centrally located for the old town, a short stroll from the tram/Blue Mosque etc., with restaurants a stones throw away. Breakfast was very good - it must be difficult catering for various nationalities but they seemed to succeed. Food was replenished continually and it was nice to have breakfast with great views. I wouldn't describe this as a boutique hotel, but have no complaints about our recent stay there. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Great location, but....

Superb Sultanahmet location, clean, with very friendly staff. We really enjoyed hearing the schoolchildren playing across the street. However, our room was small with no furniture on the hardwood floors. We had to put our luggage and stuff on the floor. Not ideal. The bed was not very nice and we did not sleep well at all for our three nights there. Lastly, the breakfast was not very good. Cons: Cramped room without furniture, bad bed, breakfast wasn't impressive. Pros: Best location, great view from roof of Blue Mosque at night, quiet, clean, not too expensive for location, friendly staff. All in all it may still be a good value given the fantastic location, cleanliness, and friendly staff.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Sura Hotel around the corner has an amazing outdoor cafe. We've been in Turkey for a week and nothing else comes close. Incredible. Walk down from the Alaaddin, take first right then immediate left toward Blue Mosque, it will be on your right side (North).

Great value and clean

My stay was precisely what I wanted - a quiet and clean hotel. 20 rooms over 5 floors and its in good condition, meaning the facilities are well kept and the room itself had no issues. Staff was friendly, room was cleaned daily and breakfast was simple but good. There was no safe in the room, but I wasn't expecting one. Wireless worked well on my tablet and phone. Location was great given its in the heart of Sultanamet, which means the Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and other attractions are just down the road. Really I have no complaints about the hotel at all. You will be satisfied provided your expectations are in line with the price. I should note, and this is no fault of the hotel, that a nearby residence has roosters. Did you know roosters make noise at all hours, not just sunrise? I didn't. Earplugs saved the night(s)!

Good Location, Thin walls

There are people speaks English. Location is good.--very close to the main street, mosks, and tram line so easy access to everywhere. Room was very clean. It seems like walls are thin, and you hear the next door and outside noise. (Outside is always noisy.) When we stayed over at the outside city one night and came back to this hotel, we were sent to their another hotel, which was more spacious, but it was at the bottom of the long hill, and we had to walk all the way up to the big street with a tram line.

Overbooked

This Aladdin hotel was full and we were sent to another hotel, which doesn't seem like a hotel but kind of like an apartment. They just gave us a ride to this hotel, and even explain us where this hotel was at. No soap, no wifi access. There's no front desk. Entrance is locked so you need to call someone both when you go out and come back. The area around the hotel was not touristy. It is at the bottom of a big hill so you need to walk up the steap hills to go to the major sightseeing spots. I would recommend the Aladdin hotel but not this apartment like place so make sure with them that you are staying at the hotel, not this apartment-like place.

Very Disappointed

The Aladdan hotel is in a great location and the staff are very friendly. The rooms are extremely small. I stayed for 2 nights - the first night they put me in Rm 104 - this very tiny room did not have a window and the bathroom was slightly larger than a telephone booth. Television not working properly. To make matters worse, it was just next to the elevator and the constant movement of the elevator did not provide for a good rest. The room backed to a busy street and there was restaurant music through the night. A rooster was heard at 4:00am. First night was terrible for lack of sleep. Second night I requested a move to a room with a window (like advertised). Moved to Rm 301. Small room, better bathroom and nice view from window. Problem was there was no hot water, but the front desk was able to fix. Breakfast was adequate. Sunny eating room. Upstairs roof patio has nice view. Apart from the central location, this hotel was overpriced for value received. Would not stay here again if back in Istanbul.
