Good Price and Decent Location
The Edinburgh City Hotel is a short walk from everything, and given the price, I consider it enough of a bargain to recommend to others. While the hotel has some great history, overall, it was a mediocre place to stay. The couch and bed comforter in our room had some questionable stains on them, but aside from that, the room was decent enough. We ordered after-hours room service, and the food was terrible, so I definitely wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Breakfast is a bit expensive; a better option would be to eat at any of the nearby restaurants that serve breakfast - Two Thin Laddies across the street was great. There is definitely no parking at this hotel, so I would think twice about staying here if you're driving. They do not allow early check-in, so don't rush from the airport to get here. Overall, it's a safe, comfortable bet, but I would check elsewhere for a better bargain before settling on staying here.

Shopping tip:
Short walk from hotel
Edinburgh Castle and all of the surrounding shops and restaurants are a short walk from the hotel. And if you're travelling on a tight budget, there are plenty of corner grocery stores within a five minute walk where you can buy drinks and/or food. Keep in mind that a lot of the shops and restaurants close between 6-9 PM, so make sure that if you're going to eat dinner out, you do it before then.

This hotel was perfect for us
This hotel was perfect for us as it was a short walk to Tattoo, Castle and central attractions. The staff on reception were very welcoming and friendly. We had breakfast at a half priced deal and was excellent, although we wouldn't have paid full price as was expensive compared to a lot of other hotels wev'e stayed at over the last 10 weeks.

We stayed in the Thistle St James
We stayed in the Thistle St James on the Sunday night and have to say the the Best Western service and breakfast was far superior and value for money. The staff in the Thistle were Scottish and very unfriendly which is not a good advert for Scotland. We will definitely book into a Best Western again.
