Over-ruled by my friends, who are cheapskates, we booked the TL in central Edinburgh for 2 nights. It is a short walk from Waverly Station, although you do pass the Jury's Inn which looks much nicer and may invoke regrets. The TL is 55 pounds/night, a good price in downtown Edinburgh, and it's centrally located on the edge of the Royal Mile. The rooms were spartan. For example, bring your own regular sized bar of soap unless you like very small bars, but they were clean and not too loud. The staff was terrific and the lobby had a nice neighbourhood feel to it. In the end I saved a bunch, and had a perfectly decent stay at the Travelodge.

Lousy room
I had room 229 for three nights. It is a handicap-equipped room, and probably one of the single worst hotel rooms I have ever occupied, and I have stayed in hotels an average of about 80 nights/year for much of the past decade. The noise off the streets is 24/7, a combination of cars rumbling along the cobblestone street and late5r in night, drunk pedestrians getting out of the bars anytime between 1:30 and 3::30 each night. Despite several requests, the front desk staff never fixed my toilet. The shower is a disgrace...most times barely a trickle, and often the hot or cold would just run in spurts, suddenly stopping or starting. The price was god for this location so close to the Royal Mile, but there are almost no other positives to mention about this Travelodge. Maybe I just drew the worst room in the house....who knows if the other rooms are any better, but I'd strongly advise against taking a room overlooking St. Mary's Street.

Dining tip:
Short walk from hotel
LIttle Cafe called Circus just 50 yards up St. Mary's Street from this Travelodge has nice breakfasts for about the same price as the Travelodge lobby restaurant.

During Festival Fringe / Tattoo
We'd struggled to find a hotel in Edinburgh even though we were booking 5 months in advance of our trip. We stumbled accross the Travellodge, and the location was what we were most interested in. It is quite central, and offered us easy access to both the castle and the various fringe locations we would be visiting during our stay... However, upon arriving I was very disappointed to see a billboard outside the front door advertising 'Rooms from £19'. We had paid a total of £264 for 2 nights Room Only. The price is ridiculous for what you get... Yes the room was clean, but the decor is tatty and needs replacing. The bathroom was also tatty, and we were only provided with one towel. Noisy neighbours isn't the hotels fault... but surely they can do something about the door closers which slam if you don't hold the door until it's fully closed. I would only stay here again if they re-consider the price. It is NOT a budget option.

Terrible road noice
Right on main road which is cobbled. Closing window made virtually no difference to road noice. Could not hear tv over it and it went on 24/7! No sleep and terrible mattress didn't help.

Five Star Value For Money
All other Hotels in Edinburgh were grossly over priced due to the Tattoo and Fringe Events. This was an excellent price for a stay in a Quality Hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Everything was spot on and we could not fault the levels of service we received. Food and drink in the Hotel was excellent and well priced. Overall a five star experience for a budget cost.

Fringe Hotel
Stayed here as a young couple- we were only looking for something cheap and cheerful and that can be pretty hard to come by during August when the Fringe Festival is on, but it was good value for money and we had a quiet and comfortable stay. If you're looking for something special though- this isn't the place for you.
