Great Evening on the town

We ate at a restaurant in the Gas Lamp followed by Dame Edna at the Civic Theatre. We had a drink at the Grant Hotel on the way back and ended the evening with a glass of wine at Sofia's bar - it was great. We also had a delicious breakfast with fantastic service at the restaurant Currant in the hotel.

Overall great experience

GREAT location to stay when you want to explore The Gaslamp District. The waterfront (and USS Midway Museum) is only 3 blocks away. Everywhere I went, I was able to walk-even to Petco Park to see a ballgame. My room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable and firm. The shower and sink were very modern looking. I feel that, for the money, my room was far nicer than my friends' room at another hotel(Ramada). There is a restaurant downstairs next to the lobby and several other cafes only steps away from the hotel. A coffee shop is right next door. I plan to stay here many more times when in town--I think I found my favorite hotel! Hint: Have a drink at Dublin Square Irish Pub on 4th Ave.--I think it's a good place to meet girls...

great hotel, terrible parking

The hotel is quite nice, it is very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. The only negative about this hotel is the parking. All parking is valet only and it costs $28.00 per day, which is pricey, even for San Diego. It is also very easy to overlook. Around the hotel are only one-way streets which can get frustrating if you are trying to find the parking area. Other than that it was an excellent experience with comfortable and clean rooms.

Very modern, small rooms

The Sofia hotel is chic and modern with old world flair. It's a very old building completely modernized in the inside all except the size of the rooms of course. The inside of the hotel is very nice and almost has a Zen feel to it. The staff at the front desk were nice as well as the maid service who all did a great job. My one complaint would be like I said the small rooms as well as the shower. If your tall or like a large bathroom you may want to look elsewhere. It was sooo small (maybe 4x 4 1/2ft)and since there was only half a glass wall for the shower whenever someone took a shower you had a flood in the bathroom. Oh yeah, be aware of the expensive parking at $28 a night at the hotel. The hotel was centrally located to everything in downtown which was great. It was a few blocks to Petco Park, across the street from the mall and not to far from the Gaslamp ditrict.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

If you have a car or are renting don't pay for the parking at the hotel find parking elsewhere it's cheaper. Read the signs and check on the street parking and oposite side of the street cleaning rules. It will save you lots of money!!! A few blocks within walking distance is a parking lot where it's by the hour check that out as well.

Enjoyed the Sophia

I had read reviews that the rooms were small and the area sketchy. The room was small but I was by myself and it didn't matter. I was at the Manchester Hyatt the first night and the Sophia was less than half the cost with a better location, softer towels, sheets-and toilet paper! The room was quieter and there was an ironing board-the one in the Hyatt was missing. The shampoos and lotions were nicer at the Sophia as well. One of my favorite amenities was the urn of water with oranges in it in the lobby. The hotel is near the bus station, YMCA, and courthouse, but I never felt unsafe, even female walking alone at 10PM.

Too over rated!

They have "tried" to build a luxury hotel out of an old building with small room! An oversized guest with a large wheelchair would probably not make it through the small elevator doors! The bedding and furniture were superb but everything else was a mess. The room was way too small and the view was directly into other guest rooms. The bath room was too small and had a shower with a half way glass wall; i.e. every day after the shower you need two towels just to dry up the floor! I guess the moto of "think green" doesn't work there! The sink was a fancyful small bowl with no handle to open or close the drain; i.e. if you start off with a closed drain and you notice it after the sink is half full, you can help yourself by puting your hand into dirty water to open the drain! I guess the architect was trying to substitute hygiene with "Art"! Apparently they have some larger rooms but one has to ask for upgrade upon arrival!
