Victorian style, family atmosphere and free breakfast near Union Square
Comfort, hospitality and convenience are plentiful at the Hotel Beresford, a quaint family-owned hotel blocks from the action of San Francisco's Union Square. From the street, the Victorian-style building looks like an apartment complex. Inside, however, cozy touches such as tufted chairs and whitewashed wood present a down-home feel. This feeling extends to the White Horse Tavern, the on-site restaurant, where pints outnumber flutes and the jukebox is always on.
Highlights
- Knowledgeable staff
- Walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown and City Hall
- On-site tavern is a replica of an old English pub

Very good location
We especially liked the hotel's location. It was less than 2 blocks from the Powell Street cable cars, which saved us a long, uphill walk when returning from Market Street and very convenient when we wanted to head to Fisherman's Wharf. We thought the hotel reminded us of an old-style, European hotel, which can be good and bad. One example of this is that we had actual room keys, not one of those computer cards. For the price we knew we weren't going to be in a 5-star hotel, but thought the rooms were kept clean and the staff was very helpful. The breakfast buffet included rolls, cold cereal, fruit, juice, and coffee and was included in the price of the room.

Great Value for Location
Its an old hotel and the rooms are small and not sparkling, but the value is great. The staff is friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a no frills room that's clean with a nice continental breakfast and very close to downtown (2 blocks from Union Square shopping, dinning, and transportation) then this is a nice little spot. No hairdrier or air conditioning, but a mini fridge and iron in the room.

Nice & Clean
The Beresford was very old but well maintanined. The room was a bit small but I have stayed in SF before and I think it is comparable to other hotels. The staff was friendly enough. The room was very clean. It is located less than 2 blocks from the trolley and only 4 or 5 blocks from China Town. The hotel does have a business center and a continental breadfast. We had a rent car which we had to pay $25/day for parking. On check out they tried to charge for the honor bar, but when we denied they promptly removed the charged-- so check your charges.

China Town is few blocks away off Grant. Trolly was 1-1/2 blocks away and will take you to Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Market Street, etc.

Charming
The Beresford Hotel is in a great location. The staff is very warm & accomadating. I have stayed here before & have been a satisfied customer. It is an older property & reminds me of some of the European hotels. I always hear different languages spoken by the clients there. They provide a very adequate continental breakfest. I have always stayed in a quiet room but I never have had a room facing Sutter St. Although it is an older property they keep it very clean.

Friendly, charming, cool location.
The Beresford is a small charming hotel right next to (note: not in) Union Square. It's a few blocks off the main tourist drag yet still a very convenient location with a lot of public trans and cabs. The room was clean and very warm (important on those cold damp nights!) and the shower had excellent pressure. The room has a tiny fridge (bonus) which has a range of drinks at competitive prices. The complimentary breakfast is held in the English Tavern downstairs - fruit, sweetrolls, juice, coffee type scene. There's a 24 hour walgreens only a few blocks away and you're quite close to a lot of great bars and restaurants. Totally one of the cutest lobbies you'll ever see. The staff were super nice and helpful. A great deal for the money.

Heart of the City
If you want to be near the hustle and bustle of central SF, then this is an excellent place to stay. Particularly if you enjoy the shopping of Union Square, then Hotel Beresford is in a prime location -- just a block and a half from the square itself. China Town is a short walk as is the SFMOMA and the Powell Street BART station. There isn't exactly a pelethora of night time entertainment spots; however, considering my relative inexperience partying in SF, there were plenty of establishments (upscale and low scale alike) in the neighborhood. The hotel was very clean, and even though the room was a bit small, I found the place to be quite comfortable and pleasant. It certainly beat the big chain hotels' lack of warmth and comfort.

Good location, great price
The Beresford Hotel on Sutter is only 2 blocks from Union Square, with plenty of shopping, restaurants, cable car stops, etc. Couldn't beat the price for such a location in SF. The room was small and no view at all. That didn't bother us as we were there to sightsee and get out, not laze around in the room. Continental breakfast was included and provided in small restaurant off of lobby. It was quite good with tons of fresh fruit, pastries, cereal.

very friendly environment for families and business aswell
I was very happy staying in the hotel, it was fun, and also right in downtown, the hotel looks like an old hotel, but it is really well maintained, and adds to the city style. it is not a huge hotel, but it gives it the more familiar feeling, so I liked it, I would recommend it to friends and family, it was not too expensive either, and have breakfast incl.

Nothing Fancy, Great Location
I chose the Beresford Hotel for Location, not intending to spend much time in the room. The room was fine.An old-fashioned city hotel with all the basics. Not luxurious but clean and adequate. The staff was helpful. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant. The location is great for walking around the city. Overall good value.
