Hip happenings in 1920s salon style hotel
Drawing on the literary and artistic past of San Francisco, the Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel takes its name from local poet Kenneth Rexroth, and his artist wife Andree Dutcher provided the inspiration for the new Californian/French fusion bistro Cafe Andree. Recently renovated, this cozy and original hotel blends elements of Provencal style with the feel of an authentic 1920s salon, and hosts jazz nights and literary events. Valet parking is available at Hotel Rex and pets are allowed (fees apply).
3 Reasons To Stay:
- Hosts regular cultural events
- Bang in the heart of vibrant shopping district
- Features paintings and murals by local artisans and a stunning collection of antique books and exotic objets d'art
Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel Rooms
Seven floors and 94 guest rooms serve the Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel. The building itself is charming and further enhanced by its French inspired decor. Continuing the idiosyncratic house style, the bedrooms are in a striking but tasteful palette of ochre, burnt orange and burgundy, maintaining the Provencal theme, and checked or striped bedding and wall coverings. Individual objects crafted and hand-painted by local artists adorn the rooms. Rooms include beds that have pillow top mattresses, minibars, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries all provided, alongside cable television and pay-per-view movies. Smoking and nonsmoking rooms are available, and following the million-dollar renovation of Hotel Rex, they now provide wireless Internet access (free in communal areas).

Very clean, tidy, and friendly
Very clean, tidy, and friendly hotel, with a lot of personality. It would be difficult to beat the Hotel Rex for location, at this price. Less than 5 minutes to Union Square, and attendant facilities. Front of house staff were well presented, friendly, knowledgeable and polite, and could not have been more helpful. The only gripe was the elevator. One more elevator would put the problem of long waits to rest. Would I stay again, you bet. Thanks for a great stay Hotel Rex.

Staff were very friendly and helpful
Staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was excellent - just adjacent Union Square. Happy hour with free glass of wine for guests was appreciated and the lounge atmosphere was very pleasant. The lounge could have done with some lighting during the day for reading and the cafe attached to the Hotel was only average. Still there were plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.

From the moment we stepped in
From the moment we stepped in to reception we were made to feel very welcome. This property has that "Olde Worlde" charm about it with complimentary coffee in the morning, and wine in the evening happy hour. Location is just great for retail therapy - 5 minutes walk to Department stores about Union Square. Cable car runs right by the hotel.

Excellent somewhat olde worlde
Excellent somewhat olde worlde feel to the hotel; complementary drink hour in lounge area, plus occasional live music, was most enjoyable and really popular with many guests. Breakfast in adjoining Cafe was of high standard.

This was a very interesting and
This was a very interesting and cosy hotel with great ambience and colour. Older style - love the fire escape ladders on outside - close to Union Sq and good restaurants and shops and Cable Car. Very helpful front desk people, very welcoming. Didn't get to join in for happy hour or try restaurant but looked inviting. Would recommend for short stay as room small.
