Beautiful views of the city at historical, iconic Nob Hill hotel
The Intercontinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco opened in 1926 at the crest of Nob Hill and has been wowing visitors ever since. Visitors flock from all over the city to experience The Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor of the hotel, which showcases breathtaking views of the entire city and bay. The lobby, with its ornate columns and marble accents, is a fitting welcome. Upstairs, rooms are intimate and modern in style and conveniences.
Highlights
- Dine at Top of the Mark restaurant for views of the city
- Located at the crest of Nob Hill
- Relax in restored lobby with touches from yesteryear
Rooms
Accommodations -- 348 rooms and 32 suites -- have crown moldings and other subtle touches that capture the authentic turn-of-the-century feel, yet the rooms boast modern conveniences. Each room comes standard with a flat-screen television, granite-countertop bathrooms, spacious work desks and plush bedding. Members of the property's Lobby Club receive complimentary room upgrades, late check-out and daily food and beverage presentations. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply).
Features
The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four-Diamond Award. It was named for Mark Hopkins, a founder of the Central Pacific Railroad, on whose land the hotel was built.
The property offers complimentary 24-hour access to cardio and free-weight machines in its on-site fitness center, as well as complimentary town car service into the Financial District on weekday mornings.
The real show-stopper at the Mark Hopkins is the Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor. The hotel opened in 1926 and this eatery opened 13 years later, in 1939. Since then it has been a favorite spot for many of San Francisco's rich and famous. The menu is eclectic; a drink list boasts 100 different martinis.
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

Great location, comfortable and pleasant
The staff was pleasant and attentive. Room with view very comfortable and reasonably priced. Meals taken in the room and at The Top were all well served and well prepared. The Sunset Dinner (without sunset at 7:30) is a must for guests. Suggest guests stay on for the evening music, although much too loud for us. Manager, [...] introduced us to "the shot" tradition for veterans. As my husband is a WWII Navy vet it was a very special evening.

Beauitful but Service issues
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Mark (our first time here), but had issues with the service at its "first-class' bar/restaurant, the Top of the Mark. When we booked our room we were not made aware that the restaurant would be under renovations for the better part of our stay. Then, when we did opt to try it after re-opening, the service was awful....slow, unfriendly, and unwelcoming. We waited more than 10 minutes for service, then had to chase down a waiter. We also waited so long to be invited for a second round that we just paid and left. On the bright side, the room was beautiful though small-ish, the bed linens sumptuous, and the concierge, housekeeping and front desk service quite adequate. Would I stay again? Maybe, but I'd check out other places first.

I found this hotel very comfortable.
I found this hotel very comfortable. Staff were all very good. Internet isn't free. Lighting in bathroom could be better, needs a light over the mirror. Water pressure to hand basin very weak. Bottled water is very expensive. Windows can be opened slightly to provide fresh air. Restaurant was closed for renovations.

Allegro Romano, one of the best restaurants we've ever been to. Italian restaurant on Russian Hill at Jones and Broadway, 7 walkable blocks from Mark Hopkins. Small, quaint, very personal, extremely reasonable prices for such a high-end experience.

Old style lux
Nice place in the middle of town, but it's a hike up hill from any direction. Pretty old school luxury if you're looking for something contemporary, but a very nice establishment overall.

The Facts!
Even though we received a good price on the room, the parking fee was ridiculous - $57 per night! The room needs a place outside of the bathroom with good lighting by a mirror for makeup application and hairstyling.

Split decision
Mark Hopkins Intercontinental
Great location. Curtains didn't close. I called front desk concierge. Person stated they didn't close but she'd send "engineering up". It was late, we were in bed and didn't want someone coming up. I complained at how can you sleep if you were being woken up by the sun at dawn? She said she didn't know. I called at 7 am the next morning after no longer could sleep with hot sun shining in my eyes since dawn. Staff was rude and said "I TALKED TO YOU LAST NIGHT AND SAID I'D SEND SOMEONE UP BUT YOU SAID NO!" I asked her to send "engineering up" doubtful if they could do anything. Man came up and found hidden curtain in back of 2 other sets of curtains which were very hard to locate and we didnt see. Aparently hotel concierge didn't know they were there either since she told us there was none. It was ridiculous to send up engineering to close our curtains and this staff member could have saved us lots of sleep and frustration, if she had been aware of her job and given us the correct information and told us when I called the night before, where to look for the curtains over the phone when I called the previous night or actually knew the curtains even existed. Also, her attitude and tone was a bit rude, pretentious and immature, as if she was doing us a favor to take time out of her busy day and actually gracing us with her voice over the phone. I could see her rolling her eyes and signing while filing her nails as she talked to us on the phone. Other hotel staff were great and helpful. The view was beautiful and the room was clean. The beds were a bit uncomfortable and if you are allergic to feather pillows or comforters, don't go here. This used to be a very fancy hotel and I think its just riding on its old reputation but now definately does not live up to its name.
