Beautiful views of the city at historical, iconic Nob Hill hotel
The Intercontinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco opened in 1926 at the crest of Nob Hill and has been wowing visitors ever since. Visitors flock from all over the city to experience The Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor of the hotel, which showcases breathtaking views of the entire city and bay. The lobby, with its ornate columns and marble accents, is a fitting welcome. Upstairs, rooms are intimate and modern in style and conveniences.
Highlights
- Dine at Top of the Mark restaurant for views of the city
- Located at the crest of Nob Hill
- Relax in restored lobby with touches from yesteryear
Rooms
Accommodations -- 348 rooms and 32 suites -- have crown moldings and other subtle touches that capture the authentic turn-of-the-century feel, yet the rooms boast modern conveniences. Each room comes standard with a flat-screen television, granite-countertop bathrooms, spacious work desks and plush bedding. Members of the property's Lobby Club receive complimentary room upgrades, late check-out and daily food and beverage presentations. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply).
Features
The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four-Diamond Award. It was named for Mark Hopkins, a founder of the Central Pacific Railroad, on whose land the hotel was built.
The property offers complimentary 24-hour access to cardio and free-weight machines in its on-site fitness center, as well as complimentary town car service into the Financial District on weekday mornings.
The real show-stopper at the Mark Hopkins is the Top of the Mark, a restaurant and lounge on the 19th floor. The hotel opened in 1926 and this eatery opened 13 years later, in 1939. Since then it has been a favorite spot for many of San Francisco's rich and famous. The menu is eclectic; a drink list boasts 100 different martinis.
Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).

An Intercontinental that fell below expectations
Check-in was perfect and the room was quiet. However, meals were, for the most part, less than impressive -- with high prices. The hotel is in a residential part of town, with few restaurants around (without taking a cable car or cab) and just getting a simple breakfast of coffee and croissant was much easier and more reasonable across the street at the Fairmont, which is where we went nearly every day.

One night stay
I had a problem. I had called in and left a message with reservations that my guest, Mrs. Vail, would be checking in before me. When she arrived, they were not willing to let her in my room, even though I had given her my confirmation number. Only after trying to reach me on my cell phone, without success, was the manager called and she was allowed to check in! When I checked in myself, the desk clerk gave me a key for room 530 and told me it was on the 6th floor. I questioned her again, and she reiterated 6th floor. When I went to the 6th floor, I found, as I had suspected, that the room was in fact on the 5th floor!!! Other than that, we had an enjoyable stay.

Mark Hopkins, San Francisco
Nice hotel. Good service. Two problems, our room faced the main street (California Street) and there was a lot of street noise. The windows did not muffle it very well. Secondly, while there was a cable car stop right outside, there was no access to other transportation, without a taxi ride or long walk, if you chose to not drive in the city.

A Classic Getaway
This is a classic San Francisco hotel. Our room was small, but recently renovated. It was a corner room with city views. We got a great price for this room and would not have otherwise been able to afford staying here. The Top of the Mark lounge offers fabulous views of The City. The location on Nob Hill is perfect for walking to Union Square and Chinatown. The only bummer was the cost of parking the car. Avoid driving to the hotel if possible.

Great Hotel and location
Super hotel for the price. Room was very nice. Older hotel but not out dated. If you stay make sure you bring your walking shoes as you are at the top of historic Knob Hill. Super views of the city from the Top Of the Mark. We had friends staying at the Ritz and the Mark Hopkins was just as nice. Would recomend it to anyone and stay again for sure. Also street cars pass right in front. Staff was as frindly as any I have ever met.

Dining tip:
Long walk from hotel
Either be ready to walk up some serious hills or take a taxi because being on the top of the hill the walking is a bit tough. The views make it all worth it though.

Beautiful Hotel for an unbelievable deal
This hotel is gorgeous and located right on top of nob hill in san fran. The only downside is unless you are in great shape you probably won't do a lot of walking to and from the hotel. The hills surrounding it are insanely steep! But you can't ask for a nicer place from the bar to the rooms to the exterior. Staff is extremely friendly and you can't beat the town car drivers that will take you too and from wherever for free!! But be kind when you tip!
