Rooms
The Sir Francis Drake hotel boasts 416 rooms, including 24 suites, and all accommodations are bathed in a cream-and-sage color pattern. Rooms come standard with flat-screen TVs, ironing boards, laptop-sized in-room safes and hair dryers. Rooms also are outfitted with a number of essential travel items that visitors generally forget, such as toothbrushes and dental floss. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply). Pets are welcome (fees apply).Features
When the Sir Francis Drake hotel opened its doors in 1928, San Francisco never had seen anything like it. Back then, it had an indoor golf course, ice water on tap and radios in every room. Today, only one of these features remains (the radios). The main lobby is a total throwback, complete with dark wood and Beefeater doormen. Upstairs, at the Harry Denton Starlight Room, locals and visitors line up for cocktails and priceless views of the entire city. All guests have access to a state-of-the-art fitness center, complimentary yoga accessories and in-room spa services (fees apply). Visitors who opt out of housekeeping services for a day receive a $10 credit toward food at any of the on-site eateries. Guests enjoy food made from local ingredients at Scala's Bistro, which is run by former "Top Chef" contestants Jen Biesty and Tim Nugent. Valet and self parking are available (fees apply).Transportation

Classic hotel near Union Square
The gentlemen who wear the Beefeater's uniform in front of the hotel know the hotel, area and city inside and out, and are a terrific sales pitch. The hotel is clean, beautiful and well-located a block from Union Square and with stops for the cable car lines immediately in front of it. The price seemed reasonable for mid-town San Francisco, though parking at $50 is not. I would recommend it highly.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Take the cable car once for the charm of it (at $6 per person one way), then walk 3 blocks to the bus that runs along Market St and the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf. It costs $2 or 75 cents (for kids, all students or for the elderly) each way and only takes 5 more minutes. All students, even over the age of 17, can travel at the reduced rate.

Great Hotel, Great Location
This is the second year in a row a friend and I have gone up to San Francisco for a weekend to watch the 49ers play in a playoff game, but this was our first stay at the Sir Francis Drake, and I have to say, I wish we had stayed there last year. The hotel is centrally located for nightlife/activities of pretty much any preference. Despite it being an older hotel the rooms are not so small as to be confused with closets with beds. The staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant and Starlight room are very elegant and the view is spectacular. Unfortunately elegant also means expensive in this case but I recommend going up to the starlight room for at least 1 drink and the view anyway.

Time-saving tip:
Long walk from hotel
If you are going to walk from the hotel to fisherman's wharf, although it its tempting, dont walk up powell. Its far easier (read: less hilly) to walk over to stockton and then up stockton past chinatown. It takes a little longer but is far easier on the knees.

Great at UnionSquare
Just what you need when you visit San Francisco. Close to everything. Hotel is well done and staff is courteous. Room was updated and always clean. Nice bed and Tv settings. Everything is in it : restaurant, coffee shop, night club and in the middle of any restaurant and shop in town at Union Square. Two stops of the Bus Tour to visit any part of San Francisco with a 24 or 48 pass are around the corner. Moscone Convention Center is a few blocks by foot as it is Chinatown. Great experience, great hotel, nice time during my long weekend in San Francisco

About 1 mile away (you have to walk uphill for part of it) is Cafe Jacqueline. It's an amazing souffle place! A bit expensive but totally worth it.

Small rooms
The property was well maintained and the staff efficient. The starlite room bar at the top was a plus - great city view at night. It was convenient to catch the trolly right outside the front door for a ride to the wharf. The shopping area 2 blocks east was cool. Liked the location. My only complaints - we found the room a bit cramped, probably typical because of it's age. And the health fitness room was closed and there was no pool.

Well located
Well situated for downtown activities. While the hotel is well maintained it is an old hotel with very small rooms and particularly small bathroom facilities.

Great Location
The Drake hotel is in a prime location for visiting many of the fine tourist attractions that are San Francisco. The famous trolley cars run directly in front of the hotel and can take you to the nearby Fisherman's wharf. The rooms are very well maintained and offer flatscreen tv's, comfortable beds, and elegant bathrooms. The only slight issue that I have with the hotel is the size of the standard queen and king rooms, I personally prefer a little walking around room.

Great Location
If you're looking for a great location right in Union Square, this is your hotel! It's close to shopping, great dining and easy to get to local transportation. The Bart Subway system is only a few blocks away and the cable car stops right outside the hotel door. Excellent lobby bar and nightclub at the top floor of the hotel. The one negative part is the size of our room. We didnt realize the size for a queen bedroom was going to be quite small- uncomfortable to manuver around and no place for luggage. They have done the best they can with the space but it leaves very very little room to just walk across without having to step over your luggage or climb around everything. Overall a good stay, great city and worth your staff for the price.
