When checking in to the hotel the people were very unfriendly. They didn't give a hello. They just asked if we were checking out. When we did checkin i requested a room with one king size bed and they said since we booked it through orbitz it wasnt garunteed that we got a one bed so we had to have two twin beds. They said there was nothibg that they could do for us. That's not the first experience that you want. The rooms were very nice along with the pool. The location was perfect directly adjacent to the beach. We put our belongings in the safe in the room and when we came back the code to the safe didn't work so I had to call twice downstairs after waiting for twenty minutes for them to come unlock it. I have stayed here before about five years ago and we got much better service. I don't think I will be staying here again.

A good time, nothing exceptional.
Clean rooms, great local. Hard sell on the time shares. Decent, but not extraordinary dining. Pretty much what one would expect for the money.

Nice hotel
This was a great location for restaurants and activities. The pool was located between two tall buildings. My pet peeve is people leaving towels and books on the chairs for hours so no one else can use them. I think hotels have to stop that practice. We would have liked a room with one bed vs two and they could not accomodate us at check in. They offered to change us later in the week if we wanted but by the time we unpacked it was too much trouble. Otherwise the service and staff were great. The hotel felt squeezed in between two other buildings.

Location and rooms are nice, but...
Two of us stayed in an ocean front room for a week on vacation. The maid service was very inconsistent. Sometimes completely making beds and sometimes leaving off the comforter or pillows (we tipped everyday but it didn't matter). The valet parking and parking fee was terrible. It cost me $150 to park my car during our stay. Each time they brought my car up for me the windows, sunroof or seat was changed and on one occasion it smelled so badly of cigarettes that I was worried I would get fined when I returned the car ($250 for smoking in a rental). I stopped tipping them after that. The coin-operated laundry has no change machine so you have to hunt someone down to get change if you want to use it. The worst was the hotel's lack of good restaurants. The Shorebird was great for breakfast, but you have to cook your own dinner. It was good, but standing in line around a hot grill was not what I had in mind for vacation. The grill poolside had nice service but was mostly a bar. The Ocean House was just terrible. The staff was rude and hurried, and we sat unattended for 15 minutes. The server seemed offended at our order (we both ended up ordering the chicken). We waited another 25 minutes for our meals. This was by far the worst meal we had. The chicken was very dry and tasteless and was a very small piece on top of a scoop of mashed potato or in my case a scoop of rice. The waiter apologized saying everything was made from scratch, but didn't do anything about it. There is nothing good I can say about the Ocean House. We walked down to the HHV and found Sergio's to be very good. We also walked over to Moose Magillicutty's and it was good. (BTW: We never did find any Hawaiian Food in what is billed as "one of the most Hawaiian hotels".) The room we stayed in was nice and the beachfront view was also nice, but not peaceful. The Ocean House is right beneath the Ocean Front rooms and the Shorebird is just next to it so you can hear all the kitchen noise as well as all the talking and dishes clanking until midnight. Sleeping with the patio door open is not possible. The hotel is in a nice location but putting 2 restaurants right under the most expensive rooms was a poor idea. The free phone calls was a very nice perk and we had free breakfast everyday at the Shorebird, which was also very nice. Overall it is a nice hotel in a nice location aside from the previous items I mentioned, but not worth the price and aggravations.

For dinner go to Moose Magillicutty's just down the street and around the corner or Sergio's at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Don't go to the Ocean House (although you may fair better then we did). The Shorebird is great for breakfast but only good for dinner if you don't mind cooking your own meal.

I'd pass on this one
When I arrived at 14:00, they told me there were zero king size beds - no one arriving that day would get one. Only after speaking to three different people and telling them I would take my business elsewhere, did a room with a king size bed magically appear. Further, although I booked a "partial" ocean view - what they originally tried to give me (with super small twin beds) they called a "full" ocean view. The "full" ocean view consisted of a pool view and sliver of ocean that could be seen if you leaned over the rail and looked over the top of a building. The room I finally got was called the "partial" ocean view class (which I booked) and it had the exact same view! Basically, I feel that because I prepaid with [...], this hotel front desk staff felt they could lie to me and not deliver what I paid for.I am a frequent business traveler and have never before been so ill treated by front desk staff. I will never stay with this hotel chain again.

A bit too busy, just like Wakiki
The staff was rather curt and not that helpful. The room, however, was clean, although unremarkable.

DON'T BOOK CITY VIEW ROOMS!
My sister and I booked a 6-day stay for the Thanksgiving week and we liked the hotel and amenities just fine. It's what you'd expect from a four-star rated hotel. Nothing fancy but very clean and acceptable. We had a city-view room on the third floor and the room was fine. Again, nothing fancy but good enough. Went to bed that first night and around 4:30 a.m. were roughly and rudely awakened by what sounded like a dozen huge, very loud garbage and/or delivery trucks unloading and backing up (beep, beep, beep) on the property directly under our window!! We could NOT believe the noise level but figured it was the once-a-week-trash pickup/delivery time so we'd overlook it. No such luck. Same racket at 4:30 a.m. the following morning. Infuriated, I complained to the front desk at 4:30 a.m. and requested to be moved to a room where we would not be awakened at 4:30 every morning of our stay. I would like to point out that I sleep like a rock every night and very little disturbs my sleep so you can gauge the level of noise we're talking about here. We were moved to a pool-view room on the 14th floor which was very nice of them (we were not looking for an upgrade, just a move to a quiet room) but I can't believe they put people in those city-view rooms considering the daily pre-dawn racket. They MUST be aware of the problem yet they persist in using those rooms. I can't believe we're the first people to complain of the ridiculous amount of noise so apparently they figure "put them in there and move them if they complain". Bad, bad policy. Seriously folks, DO NOT book a city-view room. You will regret it every morning at 4:30. Also, the general hotel ambience is very hectic, loud and busy with lots and lots of kids so if you're looking for peaceful, tranquil time to relax poolside, this is NOT the place for you. We were also not impressed with the staff service level - definitely not 4-star service.

Good value on Waikiki Beach
The Outrigger Reef on the Beach probably is the LAST good value hotel in all of Waikiki, let alone ON Waikiki Beach. Their recent renovations help them keep up with the higher end hotels that surround it. The hotel concierge staff were very helpful throughout our stay.

Go to Uncle Clay's Shaved Ice shop on the southeast side of Oahu. We stumbled on it after a LONG day at Hanauma Bay. YUM! The quality is much better then the stuff you'd get on Waikiki and, it's closer and less crowded than Matsumoto's.
