With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.
Location
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.

Policies
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Trip for RnR Chicago 1/2 Marathon 2015

I rather enjoyed my stay at the Congress Plaza Hotel. The building is dated and the room was a bit small, but since the purpose of my stay was only to sleep in preparation for running, I did not mind the room size. The view from my room was simply amazing! I couldn't have asked for a better location to have access to all the city has to offer. I would definitely stay here again and found the staff helpful and pleasant.

Not as advertised, awful experience

I neglected to read all of the views prior to coming. I have been to Chicago many times and was excited to stay in a historic location on the skyline. I took a friend who had never been for the Taste of Chicago weekend. Check in was more like purchasing a ticket at a busy bus terminal, we were greeted with a next. They didn't even say hello, just asked for credit card and id and handed us the room keys. The lobby is very old and outdated, as are the elevators. When you get upstairs it has an old dorm bldg. feel and you have to go through several dimly lit hallways. When we arrived in the room, the window was open and our view was of an aging fire escape and the inside of the hotel. The bed linens were -50 thread count, towels even worse and there was a cup of ice in the bathroom. It was like staying at an elderly relatives's 100 year old home, plaster walls and all. I immediately called down, because the room didn't even look clean. They asked that we return to the front desk, when we got down there, they identified us by our room number, handed us a new key and assured us the room was updated. Same room, different floor - though it was clean. There aren't even pictures on the walls! The furniture is very old and there is a stale smell throughout the hotel. We made due for the 4 day trip, but it was partly due to the fact that we planned to be out of the hotel as much as possible. The mattresses were unbelievably uncomfortable. The shower curtain too short. The toilet ran most of the night. I could go on and on....The price was reasonable, but they should have paid us to stay in those accommodations. Very disappointing, not a true representation of the city and what it has to offer. Tear down this relic or spend some money to rehab it. Don't waste your money staying there!

women friends trip

The hotel is in a wonderful location directly opposite the Buckingham Fountain. I was a little worried after reading some negative reviews about customer service and the cleanliness of the rooms. I need not have worried. The building is old (although rather splendid!) but our room was clean and the beds were comfortable. some of the furniture was a little beaten up but who cares. The price was right! We asked for a cot for a third guest and it arrived very promptly. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Rich in History low in customer service

While the Congress Plaza Hotel is beautiful, rich in history, and often visited by celebrities, their customer service was lacking while we were there. The only employee we interacted with that was helpful and made us feel welcome was was our valet driver. We made the mistake of booking during the Taste of Chicago festival, which took place directly across the street and created so much traffic it was faster to walk anywhere that was a mile or less from the hotel (perhaps the reason the hotel employees seemed to be agitated by people?). Other than this, we have found Chicago is always an awesome place to visit. This hotel is directly across from Grant Park which has Buckingham Fountain, and down the road is Millennium Park which has another must-see fountain and the Bean. It was only a short taxi drive to Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile. We also visited Lincoln Park Zoo, Shedds Aquarium, and saw a concert at Ravinia Park.
