Overview

With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its Italianate, vaulted ceilings and glimmering Gold Room banqueting hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the Home of Presidents due to its popularity with both Roosevelts, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it s been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audio-visual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center, while eating options here are globally diverse (Rafael s Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle back in a leather-back armchair with a bourbon or take up a challenge at the darts board in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R n R.

Great location but few amenities. Just ok. No pool, not great for families. Kind of has a creepy vibe to the whole place.

Affordable hotel near Millennium Park

Would not recommend Wed 20 Jan 2016
This was our first time staying here and we enjoyed how close it was to a few of our fave restaurants (Yolk and Wildberry). We were also right around the corner from the L, which was cool. A good long walk to get to all the shopping hot spots on MI Ave. The hotel also doesn't seem to have been updated in some years. The awesome staff and lively bar in the hotel was a nice addition.

classic old style hotel with modern staff

Would recommend Mon 28 Dec 2015
Bed was incredible. we got there at 11:30 PM and our room was waiting for us. Would have liked to have 2 chairs in the room, and ice machine was broken on our floor. otherwise it met all of our expectations. We stay in Chicago at least once a year visiting my daughter. This was a great location for access to bus and L and subway.

Decent if you just need a room.

Would recommend Sun 20 Dec 2015
This place has seen better days. I would not recommend it if you're looking for a nice hotel with amenities, but if you just need a room, the location is great, and it's clean enough. It's just showing its age. The price is beyond reasonable - downright cheap for this area. If you're not going to spend much time in your room, this is a good choice - like I said, it's clean, but the building needs renovation, and this wouldn't be a good place to bring kids - no pool, game room, etc. I was in town for a convention, so I just used the room to sleep, and I would stay here again. You can't beat the location.

Girls trip

Would not recommend Tue 15 Dec 2015
While I was very please with the hotel, yes it was old, but it was clean, especially the bathroom. The staff was excellent, very friendly and helpful. My first complaint is that when we walked into the room for the second time there was a definite paint smell. It wasn't there when we first dropped out stuff off. My biggest complaint was on our second morning there we had cold, cold showers. I have never had a cold shower in a hotel, and for that reason I will not stay there again and don't recommend it.

Ghostly Encounter

Would recommend Fri 11 Dec 2015
I've stayed at the Congress before, and had a positive experience, but this particular trip was a little spooky. My siblings and I stayed in the South Tower for one night. It was already a little eerie because there were a lot of renovations going on in the hallways- open doors with bright lights, bare white walls and empty rooms, and sheets on the ground in the hallway to cover the carpet. We had to go through many hallways and stairwells to find our room. Our room was large and tidy, but the walls were bare, which made it feel a little creepy. After our excursion in the city, we returned to our room around 8:30pm, and hung out a bit before we hit the hay. I plugged my phone in to the wall near the bed, and turned out the lights. I have one of those chargers in which the cord lights up while it is charging, and turns off once the phone is charged at 100. I had fallen asleep, and some time later, woke up abruptly. I felt as if I had been jolted out of my sleep. I opened my eyes and looked around the room- it was all dark, except for some light coming in from under the door. Suddenly, my charger started lighting up. It stayed on for about 3 seconds and then turned off again. I looked at my phone and it was charged at 100. Just as I went to put my phone back down, I saw some light flash on the wall, as if someone had shuffled with the curtain and let in light from the street. I turned around to see which of my siblings had woken up, but they were both sleeping like rocks. The room felt very static until I fell back asleep. My experience definitely wasn't negative, but certainly not expected! It was a cool surprise to stay in a haunted room. :)

dirty & run down

Would not recommend Thu 10 Dec 2015
this hotel is a one star at best. It is so rundown and dirty that I was afraid to sleep under the sheets for fear of bedbugs. The wood in the halls and staircases is falling apart. It looks rotted in some areas with the paint peeling off. and chunks of wood missing from both the walls and the banisters. there is a mildew smell in the hallways and the rooms.

I stayed at the Americana Congress hotel in 1985, I remember the rooms as somewhat sparse. My recent stay was in a room with high ceilings, very spacious, and comfortable beds. I would stay here again.
