With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

A bit dated, but great location

Directly across from park, centrally located to all major touristy attractions. Staff at checking desk were *so* happy to be at work (sarcasm lol), but when we called after returning home about a mysterious charge on our credit card, the person we spoke to was very knowledgeable and pleasant. An older hotel, but spacious rooms and tall ceilings made it feel not claustrophobic. Would stay here again.

race weekend

The hotel was much more dated and worn than expected. We had a noisy side street with late night mischief, drinking, drugs, and fireworks. Location was the only saving grace.

Great Location

We stayed at the Congress because of it's proximity to Northerly Island and Millenium Park. The room was small, but worth the price. The staff was friendly and helpful. We'd stay there again for sure.

Great Location & Value

This is an older hotel that has been kept up nicely. It is walking distance from the fountain and the "L". 1 hour by train from O'Hare and Midway. I flew into O'Hare and out of Midway. The hotel is older so a bit of a wait for the morning elevator. Had a partial lake and Navy pier view. Enjoyed seeing the fireworks at night and the lights of the pier. I actually walked from the hotel, to the pier and then the "mag mile", then took the train back. Very easy. Very good value for thee location.

Location can't be beat

Seriously great location. Right across the street from Grant Park, walking distance to the museum campus, right next to Millennium Park. Hotel is just an old hotel. The door to the bathroom was jammed. There's no pool. They tried to charge me $20/night for a crib when the guide book in the room said the cribs were complimentary. If you don't plan on spending much time in your room while on your trip to Chicago, go ahead and stay at the Congress Hotel. You can get everywhere from there and the price is worth it.

Good Location, Bad Room

Room had a moldy smell. Informed hotel management and they asked housekeeping to spray cleaner on carpet and brought a fan. Hotel indicated the hotel was full that night so we could not be moved to another room. Had to stay in that room overnight. Great location but outdated hotel.

Family Vacation in the Big City

This was our first family vacation to Chicago. The location was perfect. We were impressed with the look and feel of the hotel. The staff was very professional and courteous.. The only minor complaint I had was the room itself. The bathroom lacks ventilation and there is very little shelf space in there as well (no counter space). I do understand it's a historical hotel. Overall, it was a great stay.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Use the bus. If you're not used to driving downtown in a big city and can't figure out why there is no parking, take the bus. It's fast and easy.
