With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Surprised

The first surprised was the hotel has no parking, you need to park in the street for $4 per hour max 3 hours or in the parking lot for around $ 40 per night. The breakfast was not included. The room has no flip flop for the bathroom. No cooler or mini bar in the room. Other wise the receptionist, security and other staff members were great.

Bear's Game Vacation

The hotel was in an excellent location right across from Grant Park which is really pretty. This was our first trip to Chicago which was awesome, the hotel was however a disappointment. The pictures of the rooms on the internet are nothing like the actual rooms. We knew in advance that the hotel was older but I felt as if they have made no effort to keep it properly maintained. The carpet floors are stained and dingy, the furniture in the rooms is old and outdated. The reception desk was however, very friendly. Bottom Line: This hotel needs some serious renovations, especially after we went into a few other hotels and saw how nice they were. I would not recommend this hotel nor would I stay there again.

Not worth the savings

Even though the price and location were desirable I would never stay here again. The room was cold with no way to increase the temperature except for a very small space heater provided by housekeeping.

Great location, pretty beat up but clean and inexpensive for location

Stayed two nights to go to a football game at Soldier's Field. Great location in walking distance (a little over a mile). Great views too. Old hotel that has not been remodeled or redecorated and so don't stay here if you need new and sleek. But our room was clean, had decent shower, beds ok. NO frills and bad wallpaper but we didn't care. Nice staff. Would stay again if here for a night or two but not longer. If you aren't willing to take the old, beat up then pay more and stay somewhere else.

Great Location, Historic Hotel, but Gross

We stayed at this Hotel over a long weekend. I must say that we didn't have to take cabs anywhere, it was such a great location we could walk everywhere within 20 minutes. However the rooms were dated, no fridge, no desk, not even bags in the garbage's or the ice box. The tub had a chipped spot that was rusting that looked really disgusting and couldn't have been that clean. The front of the sink had something dark and nasty dripped down the front, and there was hair stuck to the walls. The carpets grossed me out a bit to walk on, they were very dated, which added to the charm, but didn't encourage me to walk barefoot. It was a great hotel for a couple touring Chicago, but I couldn't imagine a family staying there or a business traveler. I would probably not stay there again, and I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone else.

A great place to stay

Even though it was a very busy time for them, they were all extremely nice to us and gave a great room with a beautiful look of the lake front. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more prompt with helping us.

Location is great. Hotel is run down. Housekeeping is spotty at best. Bed did not have a comforter cover. Breakfast food was passable, but service was not good.

Great location, Very old

I think the city of Chicago was built around this hotel. The lobby is very cool, I didn't have time to relax there, but I'd love to spend some time playing pool and having a drink in the lounge. Very historical feel to it, very cool. Unfortunately, the rooms weren't all that great. Room was small, bathroom was unreal tiny, and bed wasn't terribly comfortable. Paint chipping, not in great condition, and no temp control in the room (only fan speed). I'd come back to hang in the lounge, but I almost surely wouldn't stay here again. Rooms need to be updated, big time.
