With its neon-red sign standing out against the Chicago skyline, its vaulted Italianate ceilings, and glimmering 'Gold Room' banquet hall, the Congress Plaza Hotel makes an imposing first impression. Once known as the "Home of Presidents" due to its popularity with both Roosevelt's, Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon, it's been operating since 1893. Valet dry-cleaning and barber services of yesteryear sit side-by-side with modern amenities like audiovisual tech for business meetings and a 24-hour fitness center. On-site eating options are globally diverse (Rafael's Steakhouse) and come straight from the griddle in the morning (Gazebo Restaurant). In the evenings, settle into a leather back armchair with a bourbon, or take your shots at the dartboard in the Congress Lounge, where both business users and vacationers gather for some much-needed R&R.

Neighborhood
Across the street from Grant Park and the famous Buckingham Fountain, Congress Plaza rests on the main thoroughfare and shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue, aka, the Magnificent Mile. The hotel is walking distance from world-renowned institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, and the fascinating Field Museum. Found on the banks of Lake Michigan, the Field Museum is the home of "Sue," the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered, as well as a life-size Maori meeting house.
Hints and tips
The Congress is frequently nicknamed 'the most haunted hotel in Chicago,' and budding paranormal detectives should request a room in the oldest part of the building, the South Tower, for the 'highest chance' of ghostly activity.

Be on the lookout for characters like notorious murder victim Peg Leg Johnny, or test your courage near the 12th floor room which was allegedly closed down due to paranormal activity.

Like Travelling back in time

Staying here was like going back in time - unfortunately the year was 1973! The rooms are in serious need of updating Chippy paint and distressed furniture are everywhere. Hot water is also lacking - after 10 minutes got slightly above tepid. The reason to stay here is the location it was perfect for visiting The Art Institute, Millenium Park, The Chicago Architecture Foundation and taking the Merta to the Robie House in Hyde park. So if you need a nice room look elsewhere, if you need a place to be in the middle of Chicago's cultural attractions this is the place for you.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Visit the Architectural Foundation of Chicago's store - it is a cut above the average tourist shop with nice quality items for yourself or others on your gift list. Also take one their guided tours with one of their knowledgable docents and learn a little something about Chicago's rich Architectural history.

Antique Feel

The hotel is likely very old so it was no surprise my room also felt old. The room itself felt extremely dated from the walls and carpet, but the furnishings were fairly new. The room was dimly lit as well as the hallway. The elevators near my room seemed to work only about half the time so i was forced to take the stairs from the 6th floor, which wasn't terrible. The air conditioner was pathetic to say the least. It hardly put out any air and was older than any hotel A/C unit I've ever seen. It had to be at least 30-40 years old. It was a big metal box with illegible knob controls for heat/cool. Luckily it there was no extreme weather so I didn't get too hot or cold. I'd say the cleaning crew came pretty late in the day compared to other hotels I have stayed at. They came around 5 pm for my stay. The location was great being right across from grant park and walking distance to Willis Tower and some local shops and food.

Spooky & Needs Work

The hallway to my room was dimly light with a couple of the overhead lights flickering. I felt like I was walking into a horror movie. Rooms were clean and bathroom fairly updated. However, instead of scraping old paint and replacing rotted/damaged trim, a coat of paint was applied directly to the damaged areas. Much work needed!

Convenient city location

We were on a romantic getaway weekend. Location wise the hotel was perfect as it is close to the L train and the underground. The rooms were clean and comfortable but I must say that it needs a renovation… its a great option for what you pay

Unbeatable location, good service

I stayed over the weekend at Congress Plaza Hotel. It was a good experience. It was among one of the cheapest hotels in downtown area when I tried to book a hotel for a weekend visit. After I moved in, the room was clean, and housekeeping was friendly. One of the best things is that it is so close to the central scenic attractions so that you don't even need to take any train or bus to visit anything you want!

Best thing is the location.

The location to the train and museums was wonderful, but the hotel is old and has not been updated.

Riot Fest Weekend

Stayed at this hotel for the Riot Fest in Chicago. Wasn't sure what to expect because the reviews online were so mixed. I have to say that the location is great, but the Hotel itself needs a major over haul. The rooms don't look like they've been touched in 40 years. The decor is so outdated and the bathroom needs some love. Had a few drinks in the hotel bar and learned about some of the History of the hotel and how it's supposedly haunted. After a long day of walking and listening to bands the bed gave me the nights rest that I needed. Over all it wasn't the worst place I've ever stayed and by far it's not the best either.
