Hotel Penn

Well, my first trip in new York City in 11 years, and let me tell you the location of this Hotel is GREAT !!!! but the hotel itself could use a facelift, the lobby is goregous, and than when you get upstairs to your room, you find out why long nights in the CITY are what you are going to need to come back to the room to sleep!

Location, location, location

Hotel Pennsylvania is my favorite place to stay in NYC because it's a grand old hotel, there's always something interesting going on (last time I was there Chewbacca the Wookie and Spiderman were walking through the lobby), it's right next to everything in midtown, a block from the subway, the last reasonable price in the middle of Manhattan, and it's quiet in the rooms. An unbeatable combination.

Great Location/Average hotel

The Hotel Pennsylvania is only steps from Penn Station and the heart of New York City. The hotel is just fine if you don't plan on spending too much time there. The rooms are kind of smelly, but otherwise okay, if a little small. I had no problem checking in, but every other time I passed the front desk, there was a huge line. The front desk did not answer my phone call when I called to get a wakeup call.

Totally perfect for me!!

Location was superb and the hotel service was excellent. I have stayed in lots of hotels in NYC and for the money it fits the bill. Helpful service, free internet in the lounges, free coffee any time, nice CLEAN room. Two blocks from Macy's and Madison Square Gardens across the street. I was very happy. Thank you!!

Good hotel, great location

I was worried since it's only rated 2 stars, but I had a very positive experience here. Despite some reviews, I found the staff very friendly and helpful. The location can't be beat for midtown Manhattan, and I paid at least $100 less per night than other conference attendees in nearby hotels. The lobby is a bit daunting when you arrive (very large and noisy, feels like a marble bus terminal) and the checkin line was long (45 minutes) but I wasn't in a rush. I think they book a lot of foreign tour groups, so massive checkin happens a lot.

no-nonsense, great value, historical hotel

You stay here because 1) you need a clean, comfortable bed in a no-nonsense hotel; 2) you love the history of a hotel built in 1918 with the original internal room doors, it's name in a jazz song and you're amazed it's still going; 3) you can't beat the convenience of the location -- fly into Newark and get the train to the front door for $12.50. You don't stay here if 1) you insist on the latest trendy shampoos in the bathroom, and you object to old (but clean) sanitary ware; 2) you spend a lot of time in your room and you'll find a small room claustrophobic, but then why on earth are you in New York City? 3) you get upset if the electrical sockets are in an inconvenient place and you have to have room service (in which case, please leave New York City and let someone else take your place). This hotel is great value, perfectly pleasant, oozing charm and history and for everything else you need get out into the city and find it.
