For some, a stay at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York is almost as fundamental to an authentic Big Apple vacation as seeing the Statue of Liberty or sipping a Manhattan cocktail. Opened in 1931, this Art Deco building maintains an enviable reputation as one of the finest hotels in the world, with luxurious fixtures and fittings, individually designed rooms and king-sized marble bathrooms. The Waldorf Astoria also holds its own when it comes to fine dining - two very well-known dishes, the popular Waldorf salad as well as Eggs Benedict, were invented in the Waldorf's kitchen. Weary travelers can book a treatment at the Guerlain Spa - imbibing in the Pure & Radiant Back Treatment or the Scalp Massage and Reflexology sessions - while shoppers are amply catered for at the boutiques surrounding the lobby.

Neighborhood

The Waldorf Astoria New York was originally based at the site of the Empire State Building, but now resides at 301 Park Avenue, parallel to the well-known streets of Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Home to a pleasing array of greenery and floral displays, the avenue is also handy for getting around attractions in the rest of Manhattan, from the huge oasis of Central Park to lively Times Square, as well as connecting visitors with upscale neighborhoods like Greenwich Village and the Upper East Side.

Business trip

This is amongst the worst property I have ever encountered (over 100 stays per year at multiple chains). The water from the taps looked like coconut water (took pictures) you could not see through a glass of water. Mold in the bathroom, peeling wall paper, rusted air vents just to begin. I wish I would have stayed elsewhere - at least I would be able to brush my teeth and drink the water. The staff was great and the property could be amazing with significant rehabilitation.

The Waldorf Experience

To begin, I have stayed at the Waldorf before and on my first experience it was truly magical. This past trip, was less than spectacular. The first point of contention, was the room readiness. Although the room is guaranteed for early arrival, we were not allowed into our room until 1 P.M. for after a red eye flight. We arrived at the hotel at 8:45 in the morning and had to wait until the room was ready. I had also requested a smoking room for which I did not receive and had to go outside, in polar conditions to enjoy my cigar. The last room itself was clean, however, a patch of paint from the ceiling near the closet door was collapsing. Upon opening the closet door, the paint would fall. I called guest services and the manager sent a technician to repair it. The second part of contention was the failure to repair our television set in a reasonable time frame. Had it not been for my repeated calls to the front desk, it would have gone un-repaired as quickly. The on duty manager did extend my check out by 3 hours at no charge. However, it still upsets me, that this was allowed to continue.

Helpless Concierge

Well first of all, it's the Waldorf Astoria. The hotel itself was just amazing to be there. After that, it's all pretty much downhill. We went over the Christmas holiday and we had no dinner plans. We went to the concierge who was short and pressured us into booking two meal reservations at the hotel restaurants. Not a good idea! We wanted to have dinner by the tree in Rock Center but the Concierge would not even check telling us it was ridiculous to think we would get in. Well we went by the rink and the restaurant had plenty of seating. After speaking to two managers both at the hotel and at Hilton hq our complaint was not even acknowledged. I guess that's what happens when you're a NYC icon. Ugh!
