Visiting Syracuse University

Would recommend Tue 29 Sep 2015
The family weekend event was during a football game. As expected, there were a lot of visitors and almost all hotels were taken. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I stayed here, The beds were very comfortable so I slept like a log. The breakfast was great too. Very clean and kept well stocked. We drove a long way and I was well rested the next day to drive back. Thanks!

Great for a quick Rest and breakfast

Would recommend Thu 9 Oct 2014
We arrived late and it was easy to locate. The rooms were clean and we were on the first floor which is always nice. The room had a fridge and microwave which is usually nice but with our short stay was not needed. Breakfast and coffee were great for a quick and easy return back on the road.

Poor value

We stayed in inexpensive motels each night in our long car trip across the country, from Washington State to New York. I don't expect a palace when we stay at a chain budget motel off of the interstate. But I expect the basics. This HoJo was the most expensive, and the least pleasant, motel of our trip. The worst was the smell when I entered the building -- unidentifiably acrid -- my best guess is some combination of smoke, stale urine, with a disinfectant/deodorizer overlay. They did have every door open during the day, perhaps in an effort to air it out. I don't know if the building's interior doors need to be closed for fire safety - I hope not. Further, I suppose, since the exterior doors had no locks, having them open had no material effect on security. However, if the doors were shut, at least from a glance, it would have appeared that the building might be secure. The room itself smelled only slightly better than the hallway. I wanted to throw open a window but they are sealed shut. I just turned the fan on high and hoped I'd get used to it. The room was dimly lit, too. I really had the desire to spend as little time as possible in the room as possible. The bathroom was up to standard in terms of cleanliness. Room was okay in terms of cleanliness, too. The entrance and the hall, in addition to reeking, made me want to steam-clean the floors and walls. The breakfast was fine for these kinds of motels. They had a hot waffle maker (not just eggos for the toaster), juice, and the pastries were fresh. They should not play Fox News at breakfast. I realize that they would like to have local news and weather for travelers. The Today show or Good Morning America are inoffensive to most people and would be a better choice. I compare my experience at this motel, and the Aloft that we stayed at in the Cleveland area the night before. The Aloft was much more modern, had a pool and up-to-date exercise room, and was so clean I felt like I could eat off of any surface of the hotel, including the floors. And here's the key - the Aloft was cheaper - even after you include the breakfast I paid for at the Aloft. For the price of this stay at the HoJo in East Syracuse, I would expect a minimum standard of cleanliness and security. These standards were not met. Bottom line? Want to stay just off the thruway or near the airport? Spend another ten dollars and stay some place else.

Absolutely horrific and disgusting!!

I stayed here in February 2013. We checked in past the cancellation time so I was stuck with the room. My group had 4 rooms and all 4 should have been condemned by the Health department! Where do I begin, holes in the walls, dirt and dust caked up behind the old stained up boxsprings, BED BUGS, filth everywhere! I was compensated a 25% discount and a certificate for a free night in the future that I WILL NEVER USE! That should sum it up!

Sketchy

Would not recommend Thu 15 Nov 2012
There are two buildings to this hotel, and I stayed in the one at the back. Perhaps the front building is nicer, but the back building left much to be desired. The cracked bathroom tiles and crumbling grout were what I would expect for the price, the stained pillows and towels were a bit off-putting, but what really got me was the room across the hall from mine. The door was left ajar and had a large hole in it, which made it look as though it had recently been broken into. It made me feel unsafe. I did not have any actual problems with crime while there, but I felt uncomfortable leaving my stuff in the room and walking in and out of the hotel. It was not a restful stay.

Breakfast was good first day. Downhill from there. By last day no fruit and a very limited selection of breads/rolls. On my last full day room not made up. Did get an apology from desk clerk when informed. they checked and said..."just missed it"
