Beautiful authentically restored Tuscan cottage close to Lucca and the coast

My house is on the edge of a hamlet nestling in the hills. The perfect choice as a base for your self catering holiday. Unwind on the terrace soaking up the sun and views, re-tread ancient footpaths winding into the hills, explore famous cities of art or just relax on the beach! Sample the real Italian food and wine experience from little country Trattorias then get away from it all at your holiday villa. Only 2km from the village of Valdottavo with shops, bars and restaurant for your immediate requirements and remember the famous city of Lucca is only 20 min by car. Furnished in traditional style No.11 offers 2 spacious bedrooms, one double & one twin, bathroom, sitting room, kitchen/dining room with log fire for winter evenings, panoramic, intimate covered terrace accessed from ground floor, plus another large front terrace with dining and barbecue facilities where you can enjoy to the full (hopefully with a glass of wine) sunsets and long summer evenings.

About Lucca: The whole area is rich in historic and cultural interest. Castello lies approximately 17 km. north of the ancient walled city of Lucca. It is a charming and beautiful city, with its priceless art treasures, narrow cobbled streets flanked by imposing palazzos, secluded squares, gardens and Romanesque churches. Whilst retaining all the elements of its age and history one finds sophisticated shops and restaurants. On the third weekend of every month there is a fantastic antiques fair which lasts for 2 days Throughout the summer months there are various classical and contemporary music festivals. On top of the medieval walls which enclose Lucca are wide and shady tree lined avenues. Here the locals cycle, walk their dogs and promenade. There are grassy ramparts ideal for relaxing after sight seeing or you can hire bikes and ride around the 4 km of wall. A great way to see the city from up high.

About the area: Bagni di Lucca 14 km from Castello has spa water swim pool and spa centre offering treatments all year. Barga 24 kms with 11th C.Cathedral and views of the Apuan Alps plus Jazz Opera festivals in summer, 'Fish and Chip' festival in July/August. Castelnuovo in Garfagnana 33 km 'Gateway of the Garfagnana' an area of incredible natural beauty and National Park of Orichella, caves, gorges, abundant plant and animal life, hidden villages where time stands still, great for hiking, cycling, pony trekking. Abetone 50 km a popular ski area. The Cinque Terre 63 km, 5 little fishing ports a must see along with the beautiful fishing port of Porto Venere. Florence 85 km motorway from Lucca or take the bus or train. Siena 146 km has the dramatic 'Palio' horse race on 2nd July and 16th Aug. San Gimignano 200 kms famous for it's stone towers. Versilia 30 km a huge stretch of beach and resorts ofViareggio, Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi beach clubs and night-life all night every night until sunrise

About Castello: Like so many Tuscan settlements, Castello clings to the side of a hill overlooking valleys, hillsides and mountains with terraced vineyards and olive groves in the foreground, and beyond, wooded slopes and picturesque villages. It is a peaceful place, totally unspoilt. It retains a traditional way of life and has been home for generations of Italian families who still cultivate the land. In the Spring of 2003, BBC2 screened a 'reality TV' documentary series concerning British families o wishing to relocate to another country. One of the programmes in the series follows the fortunes of a family wishing to relocate to Tuscany, in the Lucca area. The beginning of the programme shows the family viewing a handful of properties in the area and choosing the one that they would most like to live in. They chose my house in Castello and lived there for the duration of the filming. They, like me, fell in love with Castello and the house and playfully tried to persuade me to sell it to them. I said no!

Castello was just as described: a rustic, traditional Tuscan property, tucked away on a quiet hillside with spectacular panoramic views from every terrace. Check-in was very straight forward and Jenny provided us with everything we needed to know prior to our arrival. She was a very responsive host. The house was homely. The kitchen was well-equipped and had everything we needed for our stay. Beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious with plenty of storage. The highlight of the property was clearly its position, and the magnificent views across the hillsides opposite, with their beautiful hamlets and churches. It was lovely listening to the church bells, the crickets, and watching the eagles gliding and rising on the thermals at lunchtime. We made friends with the cats and were guilty of feeding them during our stay. Sorry!Unfortunately, the downside of the stay for us was the heat. We were there in August with temperatures of 39 degrees and we just couldn't keep cool in the house. We followed the advice of closing the shutters during the daytime and using the fans but it didn't provide relief. There were also a couple of issues with the water supply to the house/village while we were there, but Jenny and Anna did their best to help and advise us, and it wasn't too long before it was sorted out. Castello is a lovely house that provides an authentic italian experience. It just needs an air con unit!

Beautiful stone villa tastefully appointed on a hill in Tuscany overlooking other hills and valley, surrounded by olive trees and other local forest/fauna beauty. Jenny is a responsive, helpful host and check in is super easy. I've stayed here twice. It's a special place.

A perfect base for exploring Tuscany

We loved our stay in this beautiful location with its peaceful surroundings and beautiful views. The house is clean and comfortable and well equipped, and it's the perfect base to explore all the best that Tuscany has to offer. Siena, Florence and Pisa are within easy reach by car, but we also chose to take the train from Lucca for some trips as it proved less stressful than navigating roads, tolls and parking! The smaller, quieter villages to the north were probably our favourite places and we'll miss sitting out on the patio in the evening with the cats to keep us company!

Stone cottage on the ridgeline

We spent a month in this comfortable and well-appointed cottage. The large patio, adjacent to the kitchen, afforded us an opportunity to have meals overlooking the lush green valley. The covered porch provided shade as we watched the sun move across the mountains. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals in comfort. The built in grill on the patio was a plus. The bedroom was large and had all casement windows which we kept open to allow in the sounds of the community down in the valley - the mules, roosters, church bells. We never needed to use the second floor sitting area or bedroom, but it is there for a larger group. The walking trails - always up or down, never flat - afforded views of olive groves, other homes and everyday life in Tuscany. The drive to Lucca - a well-preserved walled city with wonderful restaurants and a walking trail on top of the walls - was an easy 20 minutes. There is a great bakery - Il Forno - minutes away from the house with fresh bread and pastries. An excellent supermarket - Esselunga - is about 15 minutes away. Castello is well situated to visit many of the wonderful venues in Tuscany. We are in our 70s, and our first foray up the road to the cottage was an adventure. We got used to the road and learned to use our car horn to everyone's advantage! Jenny, and her on site proxy Anna, were available if we needed anything. We would, without reservation, recommend Jenny's beautiful home to anyone who would truly like to immerse themselves in the Tuscan lifestyle. We were so happy we spent every one of those 28 nights there.

I would highly recommend Jennifer Gale's house. The location within a small hamlet and the outlook across the hills and mountains is superb. The accommodation is excellent and this is in part due to the very fine renovation the owners undertook which has retained many authentic features.

Perfect location for us. Enjoyed the remote, rustic feel of the house, as well as it's proximity to Lucca. The view is great, the outside spaces with this rental are perfect. Folks have mentioned the drive, I've seen much worse.

Fabulous Property, Idyllic Views, Excellent Host.

Jennifer's home in Castello is wonderful. Spacious, well equipped, nicely furnished, private and with a view to die for. Jennifer herself is an expert host and ensured that everything was well prepared for our arrival. No doubt everyone who stays in Castello falls in love with the place. We too! And we look forward to returning.

Peace and tranquility

What a wonderful week we had here in this glorious setting. We have been looking forward to this ever since we booked. The views were magnificent, opening the shutters and listening to the birds and distant bells were the ‘stuff of dreams’ . We were aware of the drive up to Castello especially the last 200m, even so on our second trip up we damaged the wheel. So please be extra careful on your approach. We loved the house and all it’s quirks especially the (original) carousel. It had everything we could possibly need, just sitting on the terrace savouring all around us will stay in our memories always. Thank you Jennifer

Really beautiful typical Tuscan country cottage.

This was a stunning place to stay. Amazing views, very characterful house, which was more spacious than I imagined. Peaceful, yet a very realistic 25 minute drive to Lucca. Just as you would imagine a peaceful countryside retreat. If I hadn't already seen that the owner wouldn't sell, I'd be asking!

Superb view with peace and beautiful birdsong

Myself and my wife stayed at Castello 11 for eleven nights. The house is lovely, characterful and cool inside. The balcony with tiled roof is just so lovely to sit on - great view looking down on the valley on trees and olive groves whilst for most of the day in the welcome shade. The valley bottom church bells chime softly in the distance. The dawn chorus birdsong and view from the ground floor double bed were lovely. The village of Valdottavo with some shops on the valley floor takes 5-10 minutes to reach by car down the narrow and steep road that winds up the hill and is a bit challenging especially the last 200m stretch which has a jagged rock face and sharp turn. Parking is 50 yards from the house. The nearest big town of Lucca takes about 20 minutes to drive to and it is simply lovely. The big car parks round the outside are free, with just a few minutes walk into the walled town. Lucca has many piazzas. Our favourite was Puccini which was a bit quieter than the others and had some nice restaurants reasonably priced. We much preferred Lucca to Florence. We thought it was prettier, much less busy and churches were free to go in. Walking from the house in the nearby woods was nice in the shade, but fairly energetic as quite hilly. We were sad to leave such a lovely spot.
