## Emplacement
At the crossroads of five alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified town in the 14th century. It is the capital of the Escartons and is home to important fairs. Listed at the convergence of five valleys - Haute-Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes and Cerveyrette - the city of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical location. The radiant structure of these valleys provided the city with relatively easy external access very early on: to Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and present-day Italy. This dense communications network has long made Briançon appear as a land of passages, an important crossroads in the heart of the Alpine massif, offering the best conditions for the movement of people, the traffic of goods and the exchange of crops. With easy access from the Serre-Chevalier station, you can enter the highest fortified city in Europe through the Pignerol gate, at 1,326m altitude and be welcomed by the Heritage Service, which offers varied guided tours at 3 pm every day, Guided by Ministry of Culture-approved tour guides, in French, English, Italian (German and Spanish for groups).
