Historic Townhouse & Garden on Christmas Steps
Summary:
This charming townhouse on Christmas Steps, one of Bristol’s most historic cobbled streets, is packed with quirky period features. It offers a stylish dining/seating area leading to a colourful, well-equipped kitchen and rare sunny south-facing garden. Upstairs are two cosy bedrooms with a modern bathroom, and a top-floor living room with smart TV and library. Perfectly placed for exploring the city’s culture, shops, and restaurants.
The Space:
Tucked away on the historic Christmas Steps, this 2-bedroom townhouse offers a truly unique stay in the heart of Bristol. Dating back to at least the 15th century, Christmas Steps is one of the city’s most atmospheric streets, now home to an array of independent shops, studios, and galleries as part of the vibrant Arts Quarter. The property itself is a local landmark, featuring two statues on its façade that are often highlighted on Bristol’s walking tours.
Inside, period charm blends beautifully with modern style. On the ground floor, the former shop front has been transformed into a stylish dining and seating area with a smart TV, creating a cosy yet sociable space. This leads through to a colourful, well-equipped kitchen with all the modern appliances you’ll need for your stay. From here, step out to the sunny south-facing garden, a rare and peaceful outdoor space in the city centre, complete with seating for al fresco dining or evening drinks.
Upstairs, you’ll find two inviting bedrooms, one with a king-size bed and the other with a double, both comfortably furnished. Between them sits a sleek modern bathroom with a walk-in waterfall shower, perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the city.
The top floor offers a second living area with a smart TV and a small library, providing the ideal retreat for a quiet read or relaxed movie night.
With Bristol’s top attractions, harbourside, and cultural landmarks just a short stroll away, this historic yet contemporary townhouse is the perfect base for soaking up the city’s vibrant atmosphere while enjoying a home full of character.
Guest Access:
Guests have full access to the townhouse.
The Neighborhood:
Staying at this home in the old centre of Bristol means you’re right at the heart of this vibrant, creative city, with many of its best attractions just a short stroll away. Within minutes, you can explore the lively Harbourside, home to museums, galleries, restaurants, and bars. Don’t miss M Shed for fascinating local history, the Arnolfini for contemporary art, and We The Curious for hands-on science fun. The iconic floating venue Thekla offers live music nights, while the Bristol Hippodrome, Bristol Beacon, O2 Academy, and the Old Vic provide top-class theatre, concerts, and performances.
Just around the corner, St Nicholas Market is a must-visit for its quirky shops and global street food, while Corn Street hosts regular outdoor markets selling fresh produce, crafts, and vintage finds. You’re also close to the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, perfect for a cultural afternoon.
For fresh air and sweeping views, head up to Brandon Hill, crowned by Cabot Tower, or take a short trip to Clifton. Wander the elegant Georgian streets, visit the Clifton Observatory, and walk across the world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge for panoramic vistas of the Avon Gorge. You'll also find Bristol University a short walk away in the same direction.
Bristol’s compact centre makes exploring on foot easy, but buses, ferries, and e-scooters can whisk you to attractions further afield. From your base, you can discover the city’s thriving food scene, buzzing nightlife, and rich history, all just moments from your front door.
Find more of our tips and tricks in the Guest Guide, which is available upon booking.
Getting Around:
The townhouse is located in the city centre, with all of the city's best attractions all around you. So you can spend the majority of your trip exploring on foot. For those travelling entirely by public transport, Bristol Temple Meads has regular train links all across the country, from London Paddington right up to Glasgow and down to Penzance. From here it is a short taxi, bus or electric scooter/bike to the centre. Alternatively, it's around a 25-minute walk.
For those who do drive, free parking is only available on the street on Sundays. On all other days, pay and display is available, however, it normally has a maximum number of hours. The best option is one of the nearby multi-storey car parks, which are only a 5-minute walk. It is possible to stop at the top of Christmas Steps to unload your belongings.
Other Things to Note:
The property is situated directly on Christmas Steps, a cobbled street of steps which you will have to walk down to get to the front door. Once inside, it is a townhouse set over 3 levels. So it may not be suitable for those with mobility limitations.
