Clean and comfortable but odd and inconvenient

Pros: Large comfortable bed, nice bathroom, extremely clean!
Cons: Choose one reception, signpost it and stick to it!
Location: In the heart of Cape Town, walking distance to many restaurants.
The Grey is an unusual hotel. Overall it is a comfortable place to stay in a very convenient location. But the odd layout and form-over-function design detract from the experience. If you have mobility issues then this is definitely not the hotel for you. You are above a bar and restaurant so there is a little bit of noise from time to time. My biggest gripe was the layout. You don't know exactly where to enter the hotel, being initially confronted by a bar and a restaurant. The reception moves at different hours of the day, which makes no sense at all, and is frustrating when you enter in the wrong place and have to lug your suitcases back outside and to the other entrance. Plus being "challenged" by restaurant staff on entry does not make for a frictionless experience when you're going to your room, not a table. I can forgive the maze of stairs and corridors as I understand it's a heritage building. But it's not easy to find your way around. The corridors are narrow, there's a lot of stairs and doors, and lugging two suitcases is not fun. The bathroom sink was a classy designer space but set extremely low (great if you're a wheelchair user who can climb three flights of stairs). Again, this is apparently due to heritage issues but that made no sense: it's not a vintage sink and it and the rest of the bathroom were modern and new.

Ideal location

A little quirky with character but you get to enjoy. Very clean room with modern facilities. The restaurant is very good so is having a drink at the rooftop bar.

hotel chic dans un quartier très branché, le piano bar est très sympa. Les chambres sont un peu petites et difficilement accessibles avec de grosses valises mais le personnel est très sympathique et nous a aidé avec nos bagages.
