The Hassan Ii Mosque is built during the reign and the directives of King Hassan Ii. Planned on the site of the former municipal swimming pool, its construction began on July 12, 1986 and its inauguration took place on August 30, 1993, after seven years of work.

Since the mosque is on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the foundations required 26,000 m of concrete and 60,000 m of armourstone to combat the effects of the swell. The realization of the whole work mobilized about 10,000 workers and craftsmen doing more than 80 million working hours.
