Ibiza’s image as the non-stop party capital of the Mediterranean has made it one of Europe’s prime holiday hotspots, and the abundance of direct, cheap flights to Ibiza means you can get right to the party for a low price. But there’s more to this photogenic island than 24/7 hedonism. As you prepare to land at Ibiza Airport, dreaming of sunshine, sangria and swaying palm trees, catch your first excited glimpse of its beautiful landscape surrounded by azure-blue sea. Head inland to bask in the verdant tranquillity of its pine forests, discover ancient Phoenician remains at Sa Caleta and be thrilled by the natural beauty of Ses Feixes Wetlands.
High season in Ibiza mirrors its world-famous clubbing scene, with superstar DJs filling the dancefloors from June until early October, when the legendary closing parties bring the last surge of revellers. Ibiza’s mild climate and moderate rainfall means you can still enjoy beach life without the crowds in spring or autumn, while the cooler winter months offer pleasant conditions for walking or cycling holidays – and flight tickets tend to be cheaper too. Thanks to its popularity and accessibility, flights to Ibiza should be in plentiful supply throughout the summer, although outside of the high season direct flights are less frequent.
Ryanair fly direct to Ibiza from Dublin, with a flight time of just under 3 hours. British Airways link up with Iberia via London Heathrow, Gatwick or City, while Iberia fly to the island from Dublin through Madrid or Barcelona. KLM fly from Cork via Amsterdam and Madrid, though the journey time tends to be much longer. During the peak summer months you may find a spare seat on a charter flight if you shop around – Thomson Airways operate a direct service from Dublin.
Ibiza Airport is around 7 km from Ibiza Town, and the short distance means that connections to the island’s capital are quick and easy. Regular bus services run between the airport and the central bus station, as well as to the town of San José and the main tourist resorts of Santa Eulalia, Cala Nova and San Antonio – although some of these services only operate during the high season. Licensed taxis are available for hire at the terminal all year round.
Ibiza is justly proud of its reputation as a clubbers’ paradise, but there’s plenty to enjoy on this friendly island besides sunbathing and techno. Ibiza Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating archaeological museum and a carefully preserved old town crowned by the 14th-century cathedral of Santa Maria d’Eivissa. The glamorous marina of Santa Eularia des Riu is packed with stylish restaurants where you can sample local delicacies like bullit de peix (fish stew). Take a boat cruise to appreciate the rugged coastline and call in at tiny secluded bays for a leisurely dip in crystal-clear water, then head to San Antonio seafront to watch the spectacular sunset and soak up the party atmosphere.
