Cool experience staying in the dorm room area. Everyone there were pleasant. Carlos was very helpful, informative. The downstairs area clean, quiet for completing my computer work. Management was very responsive with key lock issues. The place is well run and well located.

Great hostel like property in Wicker Park. I stay here for business as it has a great business center. I have experienced both the dorm and individual rooms. Every time I have come it has been very clean, I get quick responses from management if I have an issue (door code not working) and most everyone I have met here have been friendly. Location is awesome. Walking distance to a Michelin star restaurant, great small pubs nearby, Jewl-Osco, Barnes and Noble, etc. Always very clean.

This place is pretty cursed and poorly maintained but the room was nice and I slept well. The staff were super friendly and helpful as well. It seems like based on other reviews and my experience it’s a roulette on what will be broken that day. For me the shower on my floor had no water. I was instructed to use the one downstairs but it also barely had a drip, so I waited until the next morning. Might have been a one off issue that day. If not, not sure how the place can handle dozens of guests. That being said, the place was completely booked except my private room but it was completely empty except two other guests on my floor…very weird. Probably wouldn’t stay there again but worked in a pinch.

Great area, we felt safe in the hostel and walking back at night. The free street parking was nice as well. Staff and other residents staying were very friendly. We couldn’t get the bathroom shower head to turn on. Also, we stayed in a private room in the summer and although they provided a mini A/C unit, it didn’t help the heat at all during the day. You could feel the A/C in the kitchen and hallway but unfortunately our room was just facing the sun. Luckily the owner was super kind and brought us a fan. Our room did cool down at night. Overall we needed a quick, affordable stay and this was a good option in the city.

Hate to leave a bad review, I’m they are good people. Little out of their control but people were up at 2am in the morning slamming stuff around and cooking/cleaning making noise. The walls are paper thin so you hear everything. WiFi didn’t work. I don’t think anyone could get into the office/work area. I would go to the bathroom and come back and be locked out of my room. The shower towels smelt like they weren’t cleaned. I payed for the private room so I thought it would be a better experience. The bed was comfortable. Super boxed in with no window in the room. I ended up leaving a few days early because I just could handle it anymore and I was loosing sleep. A lot of old food just hanging out in the fridge and not a lot of space to put your own food.

Overall, a solid stay on a budget. Getting a turn to use the bathroom or shower can be challenging at peak times when there are more than a couple of other tenants. Facilities were quite clean, for the most part. Walls are thin, so you'll hear other stayers coming up, especially if you're in room 2. I slept fine, but it did keep waking up my wife (she used earbuds on the remaining nights and slept ok). Though we didn't go, there's a well reviewed restaurant called Mott Street next door that looked and smelled amazing. If we come back to this neighborhood, we'd probably try it out. There's also a Jewel Osco supermarket nearby. I wished there were tissues available, in addition to toilet paper, but that's a minor gripe. I also wished the shampoo foamed more. Overall, I'd give Stay 424 a 8.5/10.
