Our family of 5 has stayed at Spanish Main during our spring break week for 3 of the past 4 years, all of those times we used a Happy Palms unit. For the most part we've had great experiences, but this trip was a bit disappointing. I chose a more expensive beach-facing unit for the views, yet when we arrived one of the living room windows was boarded up. I contacted HP and they eventually sent someone to open it, but for the first 3 days our view was obstructed. After it was uncovered we also learned that we could not open it without the screen falling out. A much bigger issue came a few days later when we started to smell what seemed like natural gas in the unit. I called HP right away to see if someone should come check for a gas leak. As it turns out, the unit right below us (also managed by HP) had been scheduled for bug extermination during our stay and the chemical smell was leaking into our unit thru the vents. We were told it should be safe, but it definitely didn't smell safe (even after opening all the windows), so we had to leave for the day until the smell dissipated. How we weren't warned about this is beyond me. The last issue came at 4:30 AM the next morning when one of the smoke detectors went off for no reason. No smoke or fire anywhere. Scared my family half to death. I'm going to assume it was from the chemical fumes from downstairs, but not sure. The unit itself was very nice and the view (once uncovered) was amazing. Hopefully HP does better next time.
