First, the home was not ready at the designated check-in time. While we initially tried to be understanding, it quickly became clear the property manager was not open to feedback about what the cleaners could not understandably correct from the previous renters. There was a strong smell of marijuana, deflated balloons, tape on the walls, and a large amount of trash, including catering pans—clear signs that a party had taken place. When this was brought to the host’s attention, they were dismissive and unwilling to acknowledge the issue.Throughout our stay, my family and I felt constantly monitored and restricted. The property was covered in threatening signage, including notices stating that plumbing fees would be charged “with no exceptions,” even if damage was caused by prior renters. This created an unwelcoming and intimidating environment.More concerning, the thermostat was remotely controlled by the host, making the home uncomfortably hot and severely disrupting our ability to sleep. Additionally, after 10:00 PM, I received a message instructing us to turn off the backyard lights. This reinforced the feeling that our movements and behavior were being actively monitored. As guests, we should have reasonable control over climate and electricity usage. The most alarming occurrence happened before checkout when the cleaning crew entered the home unannounced, frightening my mother. The only way the owners could have assumed we had left is if they were actively monitoring.
