Skipsea is located in the Yorkshire Wolds, in a generally rural environment surrounded by rich, agricultural terrain, yet it is also only one mile from the beach and close to the North Sea cliffs. There is a Post Office and general store in the settlement, as well as a hairdresser and a pub. Cobbles from the seashore are used in the construction of many of the village's dwellings, both ancient and new. The ruins of Skipsea Castle may be found just outside the hamlet.
