Airports in South Africa

The two largest airports in South Africa are located in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is the largest in the country. It is located 13 miles outside of town at the intersection of Highway R21 and Highway R24. The Cape Town International Airport is the gateway to the Cape Peninsula. It serves the city and the Stellenbosch region and is located 11 miles outside of the city on Route 2.

Transportation from South African Airports

If you are flying into Johannesburg, the most convenient and safest way to get into town is by taxi. The ride into town can take up to an hour in heavy traffic and costs up to 600 rand. Another option is the Magic Bus, which runs to locations around the city. Rates start at 355 rand, with substantial savings for those travelling in a group. When you fly into Cape Town, the easiest way to get into the city is by taxi, particularly if you are travelling with luggage. The ride into the city centre usually costs about 200 rand and lasts less than 30 minutes. Car rentals are also available at both airports.

Weather in South Africa

South Africa has a wide range of climate zones, each with its own seasonal patterns. In general, summer runs from November through March. Temperatures are hot around the country, often rising to 30°C, and the Durban area is particularly humid. June, July and August are the winter months, and temperatures can drop down to 0°C. Bring an umbrella if you are travelling to Cape Town during the winter, as the city gets a great deal of rain. Spring and fall are pleasant times to visit, as temperatures hover around 20°C, and precipitation is limited.

Highlights of South Africa

Many travellers come to South Africa for the rare opportunity to see the Big Five safari animals: lions, elephants, cape buffalo, leopards and rhinoceroses. You can see all five during a safari at the Kruger National Park. The area around Cape Town is packed with tourist attractions, from the spectacular coastline of the Cape Point to the cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. The low season in South Africa is the winter; the weather is cold, but you will find fewer tourists. If you are going on safari, the best time is spring and early summer, when temperatures are warm but not overwhelming.
