Ryokan meal was excellent, 5 stars! The most authentic dining experience we ve ever had. Meticulously prepared courses served in true Japanese tradition. A MUST DO for both breakfast and lunch!!!
The room itself was typical minimalist Japanese and very clean. We had a little trouble going up and down the steep stairs to the bedroom, made harder with no stair rails. Make sure you are fit enough to eat and sleep on the floor also. Something our Western bodies needed to get used to. A great experience overall in a perfect quiet location.
Make sure you are fit enough to
highly recommend for a traditional Ryokan in Kyoto
We had the most incredible two night stay here. We had a group of four and it was very easy to stay in a shared room. It was luxurious and cozy. The staff at the hotel is the kindest and most lovely people we have met along our stay. Such a special, traditional experience. The breakfast was amazing.
No “Luxury”- Disappointing Experience
We had high hopes for Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo but were sadly disappointed. The staff were kind (although we never heard back from the manager after voicing our complaints multiple times through the reception desk and Expedia messages while still at the hotel), but the accommodations fell short, especially at $1,000 per night.
On two occasions, the shower had no hot water. After a long day of sightseeing and walking many miles, a hot shower that turns ice cold and never got warm again (even after 5 minutes) was not a nice experience. We had *not* run the bath, so there was no reason tied to our own water usage that should have caused this. Additionally, the shower drain is clogged, causing dirty water to pool over an inch deep every time you use the shower. Standing in scuzzy water up to your ankles is not pleasant.
I feel I have to also mention there is a general sense of uncleanliness in the room. For example, mold on the wall under the towel rack - among other dirty walls and uncleanliness around the bathroom sink; we also found the teapot dirty with mildew and old water in the bottom.
Finally, the wall heater is extremely loud and shuts off and on continuously; also, you can hear every word of your hotel room neighbor’s conversation, all detracting from the hoped-for peace and quiet of a garden Ryokan.
We hope this feedback helps in improving the experience for future guests.
We booked in here on a short trip to Kyoto where we wanted an authentic local experience but didn’t have time to travel out into the rural regions. This was the perfect place. Our room was incredible and included two baths, a balcony and plenty of space. The staff are exceptionally friendly and fun. The breakfast was a traditional Japanese experience and we loved it. I didn’t know what to expect when I booked this place, but so glad we stayed here and would highly recommend. Thanks to the staff there for a wonderful and memorable stay.
Very sweet and friendly staff that were super helpful when we had misplaced a bag on public transport and they helped us to track the bag down and retrieve it.
Staff were always attentive and willing to help with any requirements.
Very comfortable room with great facilities.
We had a wonderful stay at Nazuna. Everything is so well thought out, the staff are all very friendly and detailed, and the food was excellent. We felt so welcomed from the moment we walked through the doors. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who would like to experience a traditional stay with traditional food.
The stuff here are incredible. Amazing people and the room was just as amazing. Bed were comfortable, the private bath was such an incredible experience after a week of exploring Japan. I highly recommend this place to anyone. The breakfast and dinner they served was such a great experience and very tasty.
We were blown away by how warm and welcoming Kanako, Haruka and Misaki were from the moment we stepped into the property to the moment we left in our cab. Their level of thoughtfulness was beyond exceptional and gave you a sense of being in a home away from home - I believe this is what made our stay a very memorable one.
Our room was very clean with super comfortable beds (had the best sleep of my trip here), a very well-stocked minibar (including curated sake and teas) as well as amazing facilities (including the Shigaraki bath that overlooked the bird bath in the in-room garden). The property was also in a quiet residential area (recommend taking a cab here or reaching out to the property to seek the best route for getting there via public transport) that was a short walk to Nijo Castle and also within walkable distance to Nishiki Market. Our taste buds were also blesed by the Irori breakfast and Sukiyaki dinner where fresh ingredients were cooked before you.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend staying here for at least two nights so you can not only enjoy the property and the food but also the familial warmth from the staff.
Property is private yet accessible by public transport conveniently. Environment is quiet and staff is friendly and close to clients in a more or less family setting. In-room bath tub inside a small garden allows for private bathing for the family. The rental is value-for-money.
This is a very unique Japanese hotel. It's a high-end ryokan with open-air bath.
The service is hands down the best I've ever had. We asked the staff where to go and they gave us a post card in beautiful hand drawing with QR code pasted on it for all the places we should go to check Sakura trees and current events.
The breakfast is top-notch Japanese food. I cannot recommend this place enough if you want to experience Japan.
I highly recommend this place if you want to stay at a ryokan. Everyone is so nice and friendly. The rooms were beautiful and we loved the outside bath. We added breakfast and everything was so delicious. I really enjoyed one of the tea they served so I asked them about it and they gave everyone in my party some tea bags to go. Sadly, we only stayed for 1 night but I will definitely stay here again!
