About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire cabin to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Escape to this Off-grid Dark Sky Cabin in Backcountry Southern Colorado

Looking to truly unplug? Schinzel Flats Hideaway is a rare off-grid cabin set deep in the backcountry, surrounded by over 3 million acres of National Forest and framed by 13,000+ foot peaks.

This is the kind of place where the noise disappears, the stars actually show up, and time slows down. Whether you’re here for the solitude, the views, or the experience of getting somewhere few people go, this is a stay you’ll remember.

Getting here is part of what makes it special. In summer and fall, access is by high-clearance 4x4. In winter and spring, the final stretch is reached by snowmobile or snowshoe—adding to the sense of adventure and isolation.

The Space
Set on 10.5 private acres completely surrounded by national forest, the cabin offers a level of privacy that’s increasingly hard to find.

You’ll still have key comforts, but the focus here is the setting.

The property is located in one of only two areas in Colorado rated 2.0 or less on the Bortle Scale, making it exceptional for stargazing. A smart telescope is available so you can capture the night sky right from your phone.

At just over 11,000 feet in elevation, the air is thinner, the views are bigger, and guests should plan a little time to acclimate.

Access
Summer/Fall: High-clearance 4x4 recommended
Winter/Spring: Snowmobile or snowshoe for final access

We’re happy to help you plan access based on current conditions.

Water & Utilities
From approximately September 30 to June 15 (weather dependent), the cabin operates as a dry cabin.

During this time:
• Guests bring their own water for drinking and cooking
• No running water is available

This is part of the off-grid experience, and most guests find it simple to plan for.

Bedding & Cleaning
Due to the remote location, the cabin is self-prepared between stays.

Guests bring:
• Sheets
• Blankets
• Pillowcases (pillows are provided)

We simply ask that you leave the space as you found it so the next guest can enjoy it the same way.

Good Fit for Guests Who:
• Want privacy, quiet, and space
• Enjoy off-grid or backcountry experiences
• Are comfortable being self-sufficient
• Value location and experience over convenience

If that sounds like you, you’ll love it here.

Good to Know
There are no nearby stores (plan ahead), and cell service may be limited depending on your carrier.

We’re always available before your stay to help you prepare so everything goes smoothly.

Cancellation Note
Because of the remote location and variable weather, cancellations due to weather are not refundable. However, we may offer a credit (minus any fees) toward a future stay.
