Eagles Nest: Epic views, beach, in NY Times, Dwell
Summary:
This unique cabin in Topanga Canyon is an incredible retreat with views from every room. A home that combines vintage charm with modern amenities, with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Wonderful for people looking for a peaceful getaway. Known as the Eagles Nest it has one of the best views in the canyon and the Santa Monica Mountains. Watch soaring hawks and rolling clouds amongst the tree tops. Located in climate perfect Fernwood near beaches and hiking in State Parks.
The Space:
Our cabin in the sky is a magical retreat. There are state parks and several beaches nearby. Pacific coast highway and Topanga Canyon Boulevard are open and give access to many places across the region. Both the incredible house and the yard have sweeping views, with many birds, butterflies, trees, lizards, and flowers. Enjoy a beer or glass of wine, sitting outside talking, reading, and taking photos. Artists, writers, hair stylists, programmers, and scientists - locals and travelers from across the US and overseas - all love our place.
This Topanga gem is located in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains across from the State Park, with many majestic, mature oaks. The house has walls of windows overlooking the canyon, French doors, wide-plank oak floors, exposed wood ceiling beams, updated appliances, brick patios, and a large wraparound deck.
Note on the Palisades Fire: Fortunately our house, neighborhood and Topanga town is intact following the Palisades Fire and the area is now open to visit. The fire did impact Topanga State Park and Tuna Canyon Park. These areas are now active in regrowth with gorgeous flowers. Topanga in general avoided the widespread loss of property seen in Pacific Palisades and Malibu and is still a lovely place to visit.
There will be occasional landscapers around to keep up with the grounds and keep the plants watered.
There are up to two parking spots available for guests. Additional parking is available roadside on Observation Drive and Topanga Canyon Boulevard.
Located off a quiet road in Topanga Canyon, this stunning house is accessible from the San Fernando Valley (via the 101 freeway and Topanga Canyon Boulevard or Old Topanga Canyon Road). 5 minutes away is a locally-owned coffee shop and rock and geode shop, and 10 minutes away is the Inn of the Seventh Ray, an organic restaurant and events venue. 15 minutes away is Tuna Canyon Park, Topanga State Park, and Red Rock Park. Driving to Malibu or Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center, in Woodland Hills, takes about half an hour. It takes about an hour from LAX airport if there's no traffic. Beaches are about a 30-45 minute drive.
Our lovely home is built around an oak tree from when you enter through the gate. In the spring and early summer, the flowers are in bloom. There's a river-rock fireplace for the winter. Ask us for firewood and we can provide some.
There are several spacious terraces and decks with spectacular views perfect for basking in the sunshine. There is a balcony with a chill space that is lovely for coffee and cocktails with a view on the upper floor of the house. There is a large outdoor deck with a view and a dining table with chairs and a second table with a bench perfect for sitting out for dinner. Two additional outdoor decks have views of the canyon and seating areas.
The house has a full kitchen, a center island that divides the living room from the kitchen, open shelving, windows above the sink and a dining nook looking out on the deck. There is a working fireplace, two offices, and lots of areas to lounge inside and outside. The kitchen has a refrigerator, double oven, microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle, and dishwasher. There is a second outdoor refrigerator. A laundry room is available for use.
The property sleeps up to 8 people or four couples comfortably. There is a king size bed in the master bedroom, a full size bed in a second bedroom, a third bedroom with a double-sized futon, and a queen sized sofa bed in the living room. We may be able to provide access to additional space for a fee - a guest house and geodesic dome - if arrangements are made in advance.
We can provide flowers and coffee and tea to welcome you. We provide essentials, toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand soap), kitchen items, bedding, pillows, and a yoga mat. With advance notice, on request, we can provide a baby bath, stroller, baby carrier, a pack-n-play crib, a dog crate, dog bed, dishes, and airport pick-up. Bring what you need.
Our favorite parks to go hiking in Topanga Canyon are Red Rock Park, Topanga Canyon Park, and Tuna Canyon Park. Beaches we love that are still accessible include El Matador Beach, Leo Carrillo Beach, Malibu Beach, Point Dume Beach, and Paradise Cove.
Culturally in Topanga there's Corazon for live music, and the Will Greer Theatre Botanicum, as well as a series of festivals!
For shopping, in Topanga there's Hidden Treasures, Topanga Art Tile, and a series of shops in the town center. There's a lot more in Malibu, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Downtown LA, and the rest of LA. Wonderful day excursions include Catalina Island, Santa Cruz Island, Griffith Park, the Watts Towers, Grand Central Market, and the Arts District.
A lovely cafe that is a 5 minute drive is Cafe Mimosa - their pistachio croissants are remarkable and sell out early! Restaurants include the Canyon Bistro and Wine Bar, Endless Color, the Inn at the Seventh Ray with organic dining, the Water Lily Cafe, Cafe on 27, and Topanga Living Cafe, and further afield are Malibu Farm Pier Cafe, Nobu's, and Gjelina. Book massages in the canyon or have a masseuse come to you at the house.
Grocery stores nearby include the Topanga Canyon General Store, and the Canyon Gourmet. About 45 away is Whole Foods, Ralph's, Trader Joes, and Costco.
There are taxi services and people in the canyon that are recommended on our locals Topanga group: Yellow cab, Blacklane, and

Please message if interested in utilizing for events or for filming. The event fee typically ranges from $1500-$5000 depending on the group size. For photos shoots, the day rate is usually $1500/day; for commercial filming, $5000/day. Students and small businesses are welcome to get in touch to request reduced rates of $2000/day (filming and events). We have had events with up to 50 people with people being shuttled in from Topanga Canyon Boulevard, or parking roadside. There will also be a deposit required for damages. Please contact us with your planned event and budget if you are interested.
Please note that for more than three cars, we suggest carpooling. The street parking on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, and on the side of Observation Drive, is free.
Other house notes: We have an induction stove. There are remotes for each of the heating and cooling units in the house. Some of the downstairs doors lock by turning them upwards. There is not a barbecue or fire pit due to fire risk. Please note we have a sensitive septic system so treat it gently.

Guest Access:

You will see a gate just below with the address numbers, pull the string to open the gate. Walk down the stairs and when you arrive at the front door, you can use a lock box to open the front door.
You are welcome to use the entire home during your stay. We do ask that you do not wander to other dwellings on the property to respect our neighbors privacy.
Don't destroy the place, throw darts into the walls, etc. - we live on the property.
The Neighborhood:
Topanga is a beautiful place to explore and is in the Santa Monica Mountains, only 20 miles from Los Angeles and LAX, but it feels like a world away. We are a short drive away from the beach, state parks, and Santa Monica.
We are in the lovely Fernwood area of Topanga that is near the coast and Tuna Canyon State Park. Topanga State Beach and Red Rock Park and Topanga Canyon State Park are just a short drive away, as is the Topanga town center. Malibu and Santa Monica Beaches are also driving distance.
As with all of Fernwood, phone access can be limited, and road is windy and lovely. You want to drive slowly since there are people walking sometimes on it, and dogs and kids playing.
