The lovely Greco-Salentine town of Martano has retained its medieval walls and historic buildings. It is fascinating to wander through the streets and soak up the atmosphere. You can also try the local cuisine, excellent local wines and some of the best olive oil in Italy at one of the many excellent restaurants in the town. For self-catering the weekly market (Tuesday morning) is the best place to pick up the freshest local ingredients. Alternatively, there is a grocery store just 3 minutes from the apartment.
The historic port town of Otranto (15 minutes), with its castle, lively harbour and stunning beach makes a great day out.
Not to be missed is the city of Lecce, the “Florence of the South” (25 minutes). The city is famous for its magnificent Baroque architecture and Roman treasures.
Martano is ideally placed for visitors to explore other, smaller gems in Salento including Galatina, Melpignano, Sternatia and Calimera.
The closest airport is at Brindisi - just an hour away by car.
