Nightmare Experience
Reserved a two-evening stay just after New Year's, which was a busy time in Colombia.
I talked mainly with Barry, who has multiple postings on VRBO. Turns out he does not own this property, and assigned us to another person.
1) My contact was Santiago, whom I WhatsApped before my flight from Letitia to Medellin, a 2-hour flight. He responded on text but would not speak on voice and declined my WhatsApp call. We landed at 10pm, and the ride to the apartment was 30 minutes. I tried to call him again at the airport and was declined. He wrote that someone would be there to receive us, which was not true. We waited outside for 20 minutes in the rain while trying to contact him on text since he would not pick-up on voice call. A young man, not Santiago, eventually came to open the door for us.
2) The place was infested with flies. We tried to contact Santiago and he eventually referred us to Barry. Barry was unhappy because by now it was 11pm and he was in bed; he also declined my voice call. Everything in Colombia was booked and we had no alternative place to stay.
3) Barry was misogynistic, homophobic, and flippant.
Here is what he wrote:
"Flies? Just kill them."
"Spray the place."
"I got my own issues with roof leaking."
"Take a newspaper and batter up?"
"Call in a female friend and have her do it?"
"Ok, relax. You're almost at the [equator]. It's rainy season. You're lucky it's not a scorpion."
4) We had to stay the night.
- The "king bed" was merely two single beds pushed together.
- The shower was clogged, the shower door would not stay closed, and the bathroom got flooded.
- Washer and dryer was advertised, but laundry detergent was not included.
- Even a simple thing like batteries for the remote were missing.
4) Barry did offer to swap us to another unit downstairs for the second night, but that place also turned out to have cockroaches.
5) Barry originally offered to refund the trip, but changed the terms once he provided the alternate apartment. He said he could only provide a gift certificate.
He said, "Take off your skirt." and "My god what a f*g."
6) After contacting VRBO and working with Barry, he did provide a refund of one evening, but still charged the cleaning fee for both evenings.
