The Neighborhood:

Nearby Attractions

An amazing city, due to its diversity and authenticity. Mexico City is one of the most enjoyable destinations in the world. Its old quarter, also known as the “Zócalo”, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the perfect blend of a culture that has continued to enrich itself since the appearance of Tenochtitlán (Ancient Capital of the Aztec empire). Lose yourself in its many neighborhoods flooded with street art, enjoy its varied cuisine and let yourself fall in love with one of the cities with the most museums in the world.

Getting Around:

Getting Around Mexico City

The best way to get around Mexico City is via Uber or taxi. Taxis are slightly more expensive, but they are a hassle-free means of getting around. Uber is a safe and more affordable way to navigate the city. You can drive yourself but be aware there is a lot of traffic and you need to be patient.

Taxi or Uber

Phone ahead for a “taxi de sitio” (safe taxi) to ensure that you get official and safe transportation around the city. Most hotels and restaurants are happy to call one of the official cars for you, or you could wait at the ""Sitio"" signs and stands located around town. Flagging one down on the street could leave you in the potentially precarious situation of hopping in the back of an unofficial taxi and a driver with maybe questionable intentions. Additionally, Uber operates in Mexico City and is an affordable and safe way to navigate the metropolis.

Metro

The metro is cheap, but you should keep in mind a few tips. One, the first two cars of each train are for women and children only. Two, you should only carry small bags – large bags mark you as a tourist, and suitcases are not permitted at all. Three, the metro is very crowded during the morning and evening rush hours, and that's also when it's more prone to pickpockets. Tickets cost 5 pesos, or a little more than $0.25.

Metrobús

Like the subway, Mexico City's Metrobús is a cheap, efficient and super-crowded way to move around town. These red and white buses move (quickly) in dedicated lanes along the Avenida de los Insurgentes and other routes. To ride you'll need to purchase a smartcard (available at vending machines in the Metro stations); the card will cost 16 pesos (or about $0.84) and rides cost 6 pesos one way (about $0.31).

Tourist Bus

The red double-decker Turibus provides commentary (available in eight languages) on various popular sights and routes throughout the city. Tours usually last around three hours with approximately 20 stops along the way. For those looking to pack in lots of sightseeing in one day, it's an affordable option (costing about $8 for adults). It runs daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Car

The streets are congested, the routes are baffling, parking is scarce and expensive, plus the rules of the road are hard to understand (particularly since drivers rarely follow them). In some areas, there's also a danger of auto theft. If you do decide to drive, several car rental companies operate out of the Mexico City airport and in several parts of the city.

Overall, the one-month stay was OK. What made it most pleasant is the staff. Each member was responsive and kind. The building’s location truly requires a rental car. It is not walking distance to any amenities like coffee shops, supermarkets, or restaurants. Hence, every outing required a 25 to 40-minute walk or an Uber ride. The latter was unreliable since the wait for a ride varied from 5 minutes to over 20 minutes at times. If walking, be aware that the return walk to Stara is up a steady hill if coming from Altivista and Ave Revolucion (the areas that offer more restaurants, cafes and weekend street markets). The units are pretty homogenized. Those that end in “1” seem to all face the backyard, without noteworthy views. The others face the street and more expansive views, but there’s also lots of congested traffic during the daytime. My unit’s bedroom is small and holds a full-size bed, with a very comfortable mattress. The bed is simply not large enough to comfortably accommodate 2 people. There was a floor air-conditioner in the room. It is noisy for nighttime, but fortunately, I travel with really good earplugs. The lvgrm sofa, which converts to a bed, is low and also smaller with metal rods that make sleeping on it very uncomfortable. It does not cater to a 6’2" or 189 Cleaning service is only once per week, and the property management had to be reminded every week of the service. It includes basics like change of bed sheets, fresh towels.
