Venture into the city of Sunderland for a spot of shopping and a bite to eat before exploring the magnificent Winter Gardens and wandering the grounds to the 18th-century Hylton Castle. Climb up Penshaw hill to see the imposing Penshaw Monument up close, or why not head in to university city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne where you can spot the Gateshead Millennium Bridge or visit the famous Angel of the North.
