Tavaita Cottage – Creative, Quirky Cabin Retreat Near the Hauraki Rail Trail

Escape to Tavaita Cottage, a one-of-a-kind retreat bursting with creativity, character, and charm. Newly renovated and refreshed, this unique collection of handcrafted cabins offers a memorable stay for couples, families, and friends seeking something a little different from the ordinary.

Perfectly positioned within walking distance of the Hauraki Rail Trail, swimming holes, and scenic walking tracks, Tavaita Cottage is an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty and outdoor adventures of the Hauraki region.

Thoughtfully updated while retaining its quirky personality, the cottage now features a refreshed interior, renovated kitchen, and a private rear deck complete with a beautifully restored outdoor claw-foot bath.

## The Space

**Please read the full description before booking.**

Tavaita Cottage is not a hotel, luxury lodge, or standard holiday home. It is a collection of character-filled cabins lovingly created over time, with handcrafted details, eclectic décor, and plenty of personality. Some finishes are rustic and unconventional, which is all part of its charm. If you appreciate unique spaces with soul and don't mind a few imperfections, you'll feel right at home.

Located alongside our family home, Tavaita Cottage consists of three separate but connected cabin spaces, creating a flexible and memorable accommodation experience.

### Lounge Cabin

The heart of the cottage is the cosy lounge cabin, a warm and inviting space to relax after a day of exploring. A wood burner and oil heater keep things comfortable during the cooler months, while large bi-fold doors open onto the outdoor entertaining area.

For evenings spent unwinding, you'll find books, board games, a CD player with a selection of music, and even a ukulele available for guests to enjoy.

One thing you won't find here is Wi-Fi. Tavaita Cottage is the perfect place to disconnect from screens, slow down, and reconnect with nature, conversation, and simple pleasures. Mobile phone coverage is available, allowing you to stay connected when needed while still enjoying a relaxed digital detox experience.

Outside, guests can enjoy a Weber BBQ, picnic table, and garden setting perfect for long summer evenings.

### Loft Cabin

Adjacent to the lounge is the loft cabin, featuring two single beds on the lower level and a double bed on the mezzanine level, accessed via a ladder. A fireplace provides additional warmth and atmosphere during cooler weather.

Please note that during winter the cabins can take around 45 minutes to warm up. If you're arriving later in the evening and we're home, we're happy to light the fire for you before arrival.

### Newly Renovated Kitchen

The recently renovated kitchen has been refreshed to provide everything needed for a comfortable stay, including:

* Fridge
* Microwave
* Double induction cooktop
* Kettle
* Toaster
* Washing-up sink

Please note that the kitchen is unheated during winter.

### Bula Room Cabin

The separate Bula Room offers a comfortable queen-sized bed and oil heater, creating a cosy and private retreat after a day spent cycling, swimming, or exploring.

### Bathroom & Outdoor Bath

The bathroom facilities are accessed via the rear deck and include a shower and toilet.

A guest favourite is the newly upgraded private rear deck, screened for privacy and designed for relaxation. Here you'll find a beautifully restored claw-foot outdoor bath—perfect for soaking under the stars after a day on the trail.

### Sleeping Arrangements

We prepare beds according to the number of guests booked. Please let us know your preferred bed configuration when making your reservation.

For bookings of four guests, two guests will need to share a bed. If you'd like all four beds made up, an additional linen fee of $15 applies.

### Included Amenities

* Linen provided
* Crockery and utensils for up to six guests
* Plunger coffee, tea, milk, and sugar
* Books and board games
* CD player and music collection
* Ukulele for guest use
* Mobile phone coverage available
* No Wi-Fi – enjoy a true digital detox
* Exclusive use of the cottage and facilities throughout your stay

## Guest Access

Guests have full and exclusive use of Tavaita Cottage during their stay.

## Other Things to Note

* Our family home is located beside the cottage, and the driveway passes near the accommodation.
* The property is not suitable for parties, events, or large gatherings.
* During summer, friends and family may occasionally visit our property, and we sometimes host guests in another cabin elsewhere on the grounds. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and holiday-park-like rather than completely secluded.
* While the cottage can accommodate up to six guests, the living and outdoor spaces are most comfortable for groups of up to four.
* Ceiling heights in the lounge, loft cabin, and kitchen are low. Taller guests may need to duck in places—think cosy hobbit cottage rather than grand manor.
* During periods of heavy rain, some water may enter around the kitchen lean-to and fireplaces. The rear deck can also become slippery, so please take care and use the anti-slip surfaces provided.
* During winter, the wood burner is essential for heating the lounge and loft cabin.
* We have a small, friendly dog who may stop by to say hello.
* Being in a semi-rural environment, occasional insects and other critters are part of country living.
* The garage beside the cottage serves as the depot for our family business and may occasionally be accessed by staff.

If you're looking for a creative, character-filled escape with easy access to cycling, swimming, walking, and the natural beauty of the Hauraki region, Tavaita Cottage offers a memorable stay unlike anywhere else.
During your stay at this cabin, you'll be within walking distance of Karangahake Gorge. The cabin includes amenities such as a kitchen and a fireplace.
  • The cabin offers a kitchen, a fireplace, and a patio
  • Just a 2-minute drive from Karangahake Gorge and 6 minutes from Owharoa Falls
This cabin offers its guests a garden. The front desk is open around the clock.

Smoking is allowed in designated areas at this Paeroa cabin.

Restful, rustic and with many cute artistic touches. Loved the private outdoor bath. Close to the gorge with great swimming on a very hot summer weekend. Wonderful walking or cycling opportunities.

Beautiful area and nice little shack

The property was quite nice, I would say a little overpriced for what is was, probably wouldn’t stay there again, but overall the location was very close to walks in karangahake gorge so excellent for that.

Rustic bush hideaway: Karangahake Gorge

Exactly what it says in the listing. Not polished or flash but cosy and full of character in a lovely setting, close to walks in the gorge, op shops in Paeroa and the Te Aroha thermal pools. Felt very welcome and nothing like an outdoor bath under the stars!

No staff. Didn’t know where to go . Lawns not mowed. Cleaning equipmment left in bedroom. Bathroom and toilet facilities far away from bedroom. Far too expensive compared to other motel accommodation

Quirky

A quirky, somewhat Heath Robinson setup, very charming and in fact well equipped, especially the kitchen. We didn't try the al fresco bath! All very colourful and comfortable. You really need a longer stay to grt to know it and enjoy it properly.
