About this property
Rustic Group Bunkhouse Retreat with Yoga Deck & Mountain Views near Palomar Observatory, California
Group Bunkhouse | Sleeps 12 | Mountain Views
Welcome to the Bunkhouse, a spacious group retreat on 67 private acres of Palomar Mountain. Surrounded by oak trees, sweeping valley views, and the quiet beauty of the Cleveland National Forest, this rustic yet comfortable space is ideal for families, retreats, and groups of friends.
The Bunkhouse features six sturdy bunk bed sets with fresh linens, comfortably sleeping up to twelve guests. With two full bathrooms, everyone has room to refresh after a day of hiking, stargazing, or exploring the mountain. The open, practical layout makes it easy for groups to gather, share meals, and enjoy time together, whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a longer retreat.
Step outside and you’ll discover the magic of this place. Guests have access to most of the property, including scenic hiking trails and a dedicated yoga deck that overlooks the valley — a perfect spot for meditation, morning stretches, or simply soaking in the view. Outdoor showers are available for longer stays, and BBQ areas may be arranged upon request. The ranch is also home to abundant wildlife, from deer and red-tailed hawks to owls and woodpeckers, adding to the immersive mountain experience.
For those who enjoy history, the remains of Nate Harrison’s stone house can be found on the property, offering a glimpse into the life of one of San Diego’s legendary pioneers. Nearby, the world-famous Palomar Observatory provides a fascinating excursion and an even deeper appreciation for the night skies you’ll enjoy right from the ranch.
This place is fully off-grid, powered by solar energy and sustained by artesian well water first claimed in 1892. A Camp Host is available 24 hours a day to assist with your group’s needs, and propane heaters can be rented for cool evenings. While the property feels remote and secluded, it’s only about 45 minutes to the nearest store, so we recommend arriving prepared.
Getting here is part of the adventure: the ranch is accessed by Nate Harrison Grade Road, a 5.8-mile dirt road climbing from Highway 76.
Though narrow in places, it is safe for most passenger cars with good brakes and plenty of fuel. Alternate access via S6 near Lake Henshaw includes a steeper downhill section. Either route rewards you with panoramic mountain views and a true sense of escape.
Whether you’re planning a family reunion, a group retreat, or simply a mountain getaway with friends, this place offers space, comfort, and a setting unlike anywhere else. Here, you’ll unplug, reconnect, and create lasting memories in one of Southern California’s most beautiful landscapes.
We are the caretakers of this place, a 67-acre off-grid retreat high on Palomar Mountain. Our mission is to create a welcoming space for individuals, families, and groups to enjoy nature, history, and tranquility. The property is solar-powered, sustained by pure artesian well water, and designed to honor the mountain’s natural beauty.
Our team lives and works on-site, ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for every guest. A Camp Host is available 24 hours a day to assist with group needs. Whether you’re here for hiking, workshops, or a family retreat, we look forward to hosting your time on the mountain.
The place offers a one-of-a-kind group escape. Surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest, the ranch provides endless views, abundant wildlife, and skies so clear you’ll want to stargaze every night. It’s a place where groups can unplug, share meals, explore nature, and reconnect away from daily distractions.
The combination of rustic charm, modern essentials, and historic surroundings makes the Bunkhouse the perfect choice for larger groups seeking both adventure and comfort.
Nestled in the Cleveland National Forest and surrounded by Palomar Mountain State Park, the ranch is alive with wildlife — you may spot deer, red-tailed hawks, and even bobcats. The famous Palomar Observatory is just 10 miles away, and the nearest store is about a 45-minute drive.
