Summary:
Stay in a restored late-1800s brick cottage just steps from downtown Raton — original character, modern comfort, and original artwork throughout. An ideal stop for couples and travelers moving between Texas and Colorado, or a base for exploring northeastern New Mexico.
The Space:
The Carriage House is one of three historic properties on this block — this and the Gallery house predate New Mexico statehood — and carry Airbnb's Guest Favorite designation, awarded to the top 5% of listings worldwide.
Built in the late 1800s and thoughtfully renovated, this compact brick cottage blends original character with every modern comfort. Fiber-optic Wi-Fi, mini-split heating and cooling, recessed LED lighting, a 5-burner gas range, and original artwork throughout — updated without losing what makes it worth staying in.
The home features a king bedroom and full bath upstairs, a sitting area with twin sofa sleeper, and a half bath on the main level. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking in. A private patio with seating for four sits just outside, along with access to the shared yard and Blackstone flat-top grill.
As with any genuinely historic home, you'll find the charm of age in the character of the space — the occasional creak, the uneven surface, the thick brick walls that keep it cool in summer. We love that about it and think you will too.
Guest Access:
The entire home is exclusively yours — both levels, private patio, yard, and Blackstone grill. No shared interior spaces, no other guests inside. Self check-in via smart lock. Your personal access code and full arrival details will be sent automatically before your stay.
Free off-street parking on Cimarron Avenue — plenty of room for trailers and oversized vehicles.
The Neighborhood:
Raton rewards the curious traveler. Climax Canyon Park — a nationally recognized trail system — is walkable from the property. Short loop runs about 1.5 miles; full loop around 3. Great for hiking, biking, and leashed dogs.
Sugarite Canyon State Park is just outside town with hiking, fishing, and kayaking at Lake Maloya. Capulin Volcano National Monument — an extinct cinder cone you can walk into the crater of — is 25 minutes away. The NRA Whittington Center, one of the country's premier shooting sports facilities, is minutes from your door. Philmont Scout Ranch is a short drive south.
For hunters, northeastern New Mexico is one of the most productive regions in the West — elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and turkey — with easy access to multiple game management units right from Raton.
Downtown Raton is walkable — restaurants, breweries, the historic district, and the Amtrak station are all within a few blocks. Grab coffee at Coffee Sage and mention you're staying with Nathaniel for 10% off.
Getting Around:
No rideshare in town currently. DoorDash operates here if you'd rather stay in. The historic downtown and Amtrak station are walkable. Free off-street parking on site including space for oversized vehicles and trailers.
Other Things to Note:
All three downtown Raton properties carry Airbnb's Guest Favorite designation — top 5% worldwide. Traveling with a larger group? The Gallery House, Carriage House, and Casita sit on the same property and together sleep up to 13 guests across three historic homes predating New Mexico statehood. Message us about combined availability.
Looking for a remote ranch experience? We also host at our working cattle ranch 35 miles west — dark skies, volcanic landscape, and a completely different escape. Ask us for details.
